If I'm not mistaken, I think your issue was with the word "many"?? What constitutes "many"? If you have 10 people, that could be many. We have maybe 10. But we deal with a lot fewer people than he does. We have people with pellet boilers, and we do indeed have some that it is the only fuel. A stove. For whatever reason. You and I may want to have more than one, heat method, and we do... but if others are comfortable.. more power to them. Their choice. But let's just agree that there are "some" that use only pellets... Where we have never defined "many".... Dan
I do totally agree that its irresponsible, unless you are heating with a boiler (pellet). I sure don't want to go back to those days where people were waiting in line for trucks which may or may not actually show up. They'd call, ask if a truck was coming in....they wanted to know, because they were driving like 80 miles one way....understandable. But, I would usually have to tell them that I wouldn't believe they would arrive until I could look out the window and see the truck! Then they wanna be put on a "list" to call.....well, not doing that. Tried it once.....you'd get like 24 tons in, call people, and never hear back.....all the while people standing outside wanting to buy, but, well, we have to hear from the "list" people first? nah..... Fortunately, we haven't seen that in several years.....but I'm not liking the indicators I am seeing right now......tight supply, tighter trucking, and now the weatherpeople are waffling on our winter.....something about the "blob" up by Alaska giving them a mild winter, and us on the east coast a horrible winter.....blech. People get desperate in those situations, and how people react to that desperation differs. In almost all cases, not in a good way! Its saturday.....Im working all weekend....lets see what demand is like! Currently our of 3 of our 10 brands, with little hope of seeing more of those 3 soon....... "when you gave long into the abyss, the abyss gazes into you....."
If you bring that ton, all the way from your place, I would certainly drop the $500 in your hand BUT you'll need to bring a nice case of a fabulous IPA with it
I've been thinking of getting into the Pellet business IHP. If I score a ton of Easy Heats from the local Price Chopper @ $8.99 a bag, that's $449.50 ... Then add $200(+) so for fuel to truck 'em down to Steve'O .. Carry the .50, divide by 2 .. Chit, there's no Beer money in that. I'm outta business before even starting. I agree w/ both points of view above, it reminds me of when we first started roasting here back in '14-'15. Was picking up bag sales at the favorite local T-Bird mini-mart (CleanFire pellets), trucked in by WoodPellets.com / contract agreement w/ the local Fuel Oil company. When they started restricting sales to 10 bags in late Jan. - mid Feb. '15 to curb hoarding, you would have thought the apocalyspe had occurred.. Couldn't tell you have many times I was in there in line, listening to folks complain / cry / bitch about the restriction of when the next delivery was coming in. I understand all about prior planning, but that's long past.. and for some, common courtesy & civility are "out the window" when oil is $3.40+/gal., propane is north of $4.00/gal, and it's cold outside. This thread has been a telling read - we're down to a ton here, I better get my tired azz in gear and pickup some pellets like today. Have a fun day all. Before I forget, Thank You to all the FHC military folks for your service.
well, I know how much it costs to deliver.....and then try and find someone to carry that ton down my cellar stair, across the basement, and piled in the corner. I guess it just depends on brand? I like Fir pellets.....they'll run you about $369/ton or more, I can only take delivery on sunny Sunday evenings when there is no inclement weather 3 days prior, and you need to notify me at least a week in advance (Im a busy guy, you know).....then there's you driving it down here, and me watching you hump them down my cellar stairs.......be nice to see someone else do it for a change....then, once you're done, Ima gonna ask you if it was worth it.....
Good read don't know why i waited this long to encounter. Myself I voted before reading any of this that there would be a pellet shortage this year, why hmmmm don't have any scientific reasoning behind it, just a gut feeling knowing what i know . I will be obtaining as many tons of pellets as I can physically obtain on none other than my guy feeling, it has never steered me wrong. Once again good read!
I agree completely. Even if wood pellets did become almost impossible to get, my local feed store has literally tons of corn I can burn in my pellet stove if need be. A lot of pellet burners do not know they have other options like corn or coal, but people just do not think outside the box anymore. I like to have at least three choices of fuel types to heat my home, but I live in Maine too where heating a home is one of the biggest costs a homeowner faces. Still, it is rare that there are (3) shortages of heating supplies at once, and one type I produce myself and have ample amounts on hand all the time (wood). Myself, I would never buy a stove that was not a wood/coal combination; I just like having that coal burning option. Even then, I have burned coal successfully in appliances that were not originally designed for it by modifying them.
I was paying over $5/gal for propane - who can afford a house payment a month for propane even keeping the house at 64*? Fortunately even though the local place was scrambling and limiting customers to 10 bags, I was able to find a good stash of FSU's in Londonderry, NH. Since I work in Bedford, that wasn't too bad of a drive for me - and they didn't jack up the price. I was taking 15 bags at a time, 4-5 days a week (I still had the Patriot back then, so couldn't take as much as I can now)
I dunno....your post above said delivered.....you'd likely lose in small claims court for your unethical and intentionally misleading advertising! I AM in Massachusetts, you know!
yup, some stoves can burn corn......tried it once up till and including when I cut myself opening the cans....creamed corn didn't seam to work quite as well, go figure.... as for coal, be very careful with that! A much higher temperature, Ive seen it tried, right up until it burned the auger up.....that auger was literally half the length it should have been......also issues with the coal eating up the bin! Is there much coal in Maine? better choices might be nut hulls, etc....Ive seen Harmans running on grass pellets and alfalfa
Hot isn't the word. I burned coal for years, the side of the stove could get hot enough so the magnet thermometer would fall off! 800°+.. I think that would melt the p68... The combo stoves really were meant for wood.. Coal needs under fire air.. Yeah... you "could" use coal in a combo wood stove, but I would prefer burning wood in a coal stove.. (Which you do to light the coal). Biggest issue, is the firebox isn't really big enough to put a big charge of wood in it.. Coal is cheapest.. but dirtiest. Storing and burning. Wood is cleaner... but still dirty. mostly storing. Pellets..... not as hot as either... but a lot cleaner... Young... I did wood. Older... I did coal. More Older still... pellets. Mostest Oldest... (if still breathing)... probly use the NG!!! Dan
