Well, you know what they say; You can lead a horse to water....but you can’t make him lay on his back and float!
My Dad A Vietnam Pathfinder Paratrooper 101st Airborne is one of the hardest working guys Iv ever met, I get all my work ethic from him, he used to work me into the ground, i never complained now he comes with me, helps me on my land and we do wood/chores all the time. He builds fishing rods for fun in the winter and just made me a sweet camouflage rod for freshwater bass fishing.
That’s a shame. Some people don’t have the desire to work wood and burn. It’s just not in their blood. I wouldn’t mind a little wood stove in my work shed, Buzzsaw. I mean if they aren’t using theirs... Plenty of room here on the farm. We’d take it in. Give it a a little work to do. It’d have a fulfilling and complete life. Just sayin’
Timberdog beat me to it with the horse saying. If people only knew how easy and fun it could be to have a fire maybe they would take care of the wood better, I feel like they just don't know. I used to get upset when I would see my well cared for firewood I delivered in a pile weeks later in the same spot I dumped it, not covered. Insert horse to water saying here
Invite him over to help split some wood. Just enough to equal what you are giving away. Maybe, it'll instill in him, some of the effort you are extending to make firewood. Huge maybe.
"Hastily tarped". They know they did bad. Just say, "well, your wood got wet", and leave it at that. No more free wood until they move the wood they have to a covered area.
I had given some seasoned splits to someone who had given me several trees they had taken down so they could do some backyard campfires with the kids. When I went back for another load a month + later, splits still sitting in the same spot uncovered, untouched. Oh well, give 5-10 splits and take home 3 truckloads haha
In his defense he did have arm surgery last Spring and has somewhat limited use of it. His left upper arm and he is a righty. He is getting workmans comp too so doesnt want to get caught. Even before that he didnt take care of the wood they had. The stove takes two 16" splits and family gave it to them so he wants it.
Maybe you should insist he goes out and gathers wood with you. I gathered and stacked wood when I had a arm in a sling. He can do something out there.
Sounds like he is in fear of being detected that he can still work enough and that it may affect his comp claim? Well that and the just doesn't want too thing.
That is no excuse! I've heard of many say they are afraid to do some work; even mowing lawns on a riding mower. That is pure bull. I drew WC for a long time and never hesitated to do what I could indoors or out. I even told them freely what I was doing and invited them out to spend a day. I did have a couple people come out but turned me down when it came to work. lol So these people knew we heated with wood and did not buy the wood either. We never had a problem with it.
I’m with Sir Backwoods Savage and the others. Most here know I had a completely severed rotator cuff tendon (the big one) and was off work for 10 weeks, my right shoulder, and I’m RH...Yes, it took a little longer but that wood cart got filled one split at a time and my home and family stayed warm. Able to and want to are largely matters of choice. They are entitled and lazy buZZsaw BRAD and I would stop the enabling. Bet he was raised in front of a Nintendo/Play Station, never played a team sport in his life and thinks life comes with a re-set button when things go rough too? Workers comp looks for things like dragging a deer, out raw dogging on an ATV, working for money on the side, etc-they would not even blink over a MAN heating his home with wood and keeping his family warm-Rant Over
Seems like a little case of need to vs want to... I got a couple minor health issues BUT I wants to sit in front of my wood stove in January.. so
Sorry the boyfriend doesn't doba better job. I know the feeling. I gave a good friend some of the plastic pallets to stack his wood on that we went over and cut, split...still in a pile...
I have a Camillus just like that. Found it under the spare tire of an old foxbody mustang I bought years ago. No shieth but there definitely solid purpose built knives.
