You guys who had the noisy blowers.....if they were the convection (room air) ones, did you try putting a few drops of oil in the oil ports? Many motors have them, although they're not obvious. Let me know if you need pics of them.

The first pic shows the oil "holes" facing toward the top of the motor, but many times they're located on the bottom. I had that on my 10-CPM, and took the blower assembly out & rotated the motor so they were on top.....ended-up very much like pic #1.

2nd pic shows a motor with oil holes w/ yellow dust plugs. Had that on the Astoria, but never saw them on any other stove since. Again, they could be on the underside.

As for the oil, 3 in 1 red-can will do in a pinch (3-4 drops in each port), but the one that's actually made for these motors is the 3 in 1 in the blue can.

Bottom line....it must be 20w NON DETERGENT oil....not motor oil for a car engine!

Guys as far as I know the Dayton distribution blower on a Harman doesn't have a designated oil spot in the outside, so for the last few seasons what I've been doing is take the blower off, disassemble it, take the squirrel cage out and give it a good thorough cleaning, then before putting it all back together, I put a few drops of 3 in 1 oil on the shaft before sliding the squirrel cage back on. Is this appropriate?

I put a new Dayton distribution blower on my stove 2 weeks ago. It has a very loud whine to it. Very annoying. I'm a little nervous about what it's going to sound like with the blower on high. Unfortunately I bought it 2 years ago so I doubt I could return it.

My distribution blower on the Hudson River has always had a whine to it, you get used to it over time lol. I have been secretly hoping it would die but just won't, and I cannot bring myself to by a new one until it does. About 25 tons haven't killed it yet.

TT I believe that has an A.O. Smith motor with bearings. You would need to get oil to the shield area on the bearing to be effective. Most bearings in motors are shielded, Not sealed. So oil wioll seep into them.

Next time you have the motor out and apart, Snap a pic of the name plate and end cap on the motor. To be sure, As Dayton could use any one of the 3 3/8 frame motors. Cheapest bid gets the deal. But usually its A.O. Smith

Same here, meaning every season I contemplate buying a backup blower in case mine dies. So far it has lasted 7 seasons and I never had to buy a backup to replace it yet. Suspect I just jinxed myself by saying this. Funny, when I researched the replacement motor a couple years ago, I learned it cost $170 - $230 for the Harman branded part, but the exact same Dayton branded part can be had for $70 through Grainger or Amazon. Go figure.

You and subby might be able confirm this, I was told that the original Harman has a better motor(IE bearings). Where the Dayton replacement was cheaper(IE with sleeved bushings).

I have never been able to compare, I usually just order the motor(approx $35) and replace it on the original. The motor I have gotten were all bearings(no oil ports).

Mine is a combustion/exhaust blower. I tried oiling it with no luck. She's toast. The new motor arrived today but I didn't have a chance to put it in. Hopefully tomorrow or at least by the weekend

That one says sleeve'd(bushing) so putting oil on the shaft should help., But getting it on the sleeve itself would be better.

I got to see if we have a sleeve'd at work and I'll see if its possible to get oil to the sleeve. Sometimes it takes a long tube to get oil into them. Usually through one of the air cooling ports.

Looking at it and the item number, (2c647) I'd say yes. My blower, both old and new, had the same Dayton number as yours (99080464). $80 at Grainger, $70 at Amazon. I put the stove in TEST mode after I installed it to make sure it ran and I don't recall hearing a whine, only after I touched the stove off for a test run. It's so annoying, for $70 I'm seriously thinking about buying another one and keeping this one for a spare.
