I have access to lots and lots of hackberry - well over a hundred cord most likely. Hackberry loves tree lines and I have about 2 miles of tree line that I can have for the hauling. The farmer wants to get the shade off his fields and wants the tree lines down. With that much wood, it will most likely be the majority of what I burn, along with Osage orange (which is very prevalent in the tree lines, as well). I cut and split about 10 cord of it this year. Stringy to split, but I haven't burned any of it. Who has burned it and how do you like it? Any experience with dry times? The charts say its BTU's are close the red oak (21 vs. 24). Having an OWB, I tend to split into larger pieces. Who's burning it and how do you like it?
Dries fairly fast. Lights fast with the stringy parts coming off. Burns ok...nowhere near red oak imo. Walnut would be a closer comparison. Lots of ash if I remember correctly. ..its been a cpl years since I had some. Should burn good with hedge in the mix.
