I have a one attached to my hvac system. It's set to come on every 2 hours and test the humidity level. If it's low it runs until it reaches the correct percentage and then shuts off. It's a lot easier than messing with pots of water and portable units. I do have one in the bedroom though.

As most know, we keep our house a lot warmer in winter than others do yet we do not have a humidity problem! Over the years we had tried some humidifiers but hated them so no longer use them. We do keep a pot of water on the stove but perhaps a couple other things we do help more than that. First is that we do not have an exhaust fan in the bathroom so do not run it when taking showers. Just leave the humidity in the house. But the big thing is that my wife will, 99% of the time, dry the laundry using the wood stove. This puts a tremendous amount of humidity in the house and also saves us a lot of dollars in drying the clothing.

Also the air in here does not dry out the sinus'. As for the laundry, she does it more than once per week but it normally does not cause any problems except to cut down on the space for a few hours.

That's great for hot air systems but can 't be used on hot water heat..

We have a Bemis Waterwick humidifier we bought many moons ago, it's pretty much the same humidifier that's in the link. We keep the humidity level in basement around 30 and up here usually runs around 35 - 40. We've never had a problem with it.

Our stove is in the basement which is damp to begin with, we keep a cast iron pot with water on it on the stove, my bathroom is in the basement and doesn’t have an exhaust fan and my wife dries laundry near the stove so we do pretty good here.

We do tend to hang clothes and it does help! Our house is tight! Humidity has been a horrible 16%, and with a steamer going in the bedroom and a pot on the stove, we can only get to about 20%. I was planning on swinging by The Home Cheapo, but Dawn's studded winter tires came in and i needed to get them on at the shop. I'll be certainly be trying to get in there tomorrow.

We've learned that anything below about 10° pretty much all feels the same.

We have been considering one of those as our HVAC blower runs 24/7 because of an air cleaner. Could you please tell me what one you have ? Would you buy the same one again ? Thanks in advance for your help with this.
