I really don't see the need f0r the shield or the brass spacers. Do you see any reason the dogs could not be attached directly to the housing the way they are on a 660?
They usually are attached directly to the clutch clover. That's why most of us are asking wtf that bracket is haha
That is strange. If you were to use the roller catcher, you'd have to ditch the spacers - unless they make a longer catcher to work with them. All my saws with double dawgs get the roller catcher. That little aluminum hook tears up a chain pretty bad if for some reason you throw one. Thankfully, I haven't had any incidents with the roller catcher setup. I doubt they'd hurt the chain much.
Without an IPL for that saw or having it in front of me, I don't know for sure. I'm positive however that you wouldn't be the first to mount 'em directly.
The dogs are the same size as on my 660, which are attached directly to the outside of the clutch cover. Being a bigger saw, the 660 has more space between the dogs than the 461 would have without the spacers, but I don't see a problem with that. The 660 does not have a roller catcher so I'm not sure why I should need one on the 461. I didn't know such a small modification would create such a large amount of thought and discussion. This was suppose to be a no brainer
Yup. If the provisions are there, why not? Also, if you ever have a chain catch that hook, you'll switch to a roller and dump that hook pretty quick like.
I wish there was a roller setup for the stock spikes. Something integrated into the clutch cover perhaps. I have duals and a roller on my 261 but they are kinda big on it and grab a little too aggressively at times.
Okay I spoke with a guy from Stihl today and here is the scoop: 1. The shield and spacers are generally used on a rescue setup. No problem running the saw for cutting trees with the shield and spacers in place. But since the parts guy didn't give me a choice I can return them for a full refund. 2. The large dogs can, and generally are, attached to the clutch housing. 3. As for the roller catcher; he said it's a matter of choice for the owner. 4. The roller for the 461 is just under $6.00. Cheap insurance, but in 10 years of cutting, yeah I'm a relatively new cutter at 61 years old, I've never broken or thrown a chain. Maybe I'll get it just to give it a try, six bucks ain't noting.
