At some point most of us put our last quarter into one of those phones and never went back. I remember using a payphone for the last time. It was either 1999 or 2000 and a friend and I had taken a bus into the city on a hot summer day to go skateboarding. On the way back we missed the last bus transfer and got stranded 10 miles from home. After skating another 5 miles or so in the heat, I broke down and called my mother for a ride. Man, how the heck did 20+ years just disappear into the ether?
