NHMM - The progression of storm names were - Big wind - Riley Heavy wet snow - Quinn Recent deep snow - Skylar Quinn actually formed before Riley, but was slow moving. Riley hit the east coast first. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
I never heard of putting names to snow storms before. Must be something new. I know they do it for hurricanes of course, but these are just snowfall. Thanks Mike!
Seems to me they've been doing it for a while. I pretty much have been ignoring the named storms thing but it sure does come in handy when you get more than one a month and can't say the November storm and the March storm to differentiate them.
I've seen so many blizzards I pretty much forget the last one when the next one comes along. I do remember riding around in 1970 Ford station wagon the entire night until 5 am during the blizzard of "78" with my wife, who was my girlfriend at the time. Oh, we also had a case of beer. Different times back then you know. We didn't know it was a blizzard at the time, cause nobody told us. When the snow started getting 3 feet deep, we just started following plows around because we only had 2 wheel drive obviously.
I don't know what's wrong with me but I just love snow! Alway's have and the more the better, every bit of it - from waiting for the anticipated storm, to watching it accumulate, plowing, driving, playing and even shoveling it. The only part of it I don't like is watching it melt.
This was how my morning started. Plowed everything last night and got out early this morning before work. Probably another foot of snow overnight. So glad I have a tractor with a winch. Bailed me out one more time.
I'm guessing that "they" are the big, drive by news/weather people. A little added drama for revenue. Soon they'll be naming decent sized rainstorms and a hot/cold spell.
We were only forecast to get 7-18". Between 5am Wed and 2pm we got somewhere between 24-30!!! Even for the snow belt those totals are impressive for 9 hrs. Nothing yesterday. Another 8-10 last night . I'm tired of plowing!!!!
I took this photo from the barnyard for a different reason, but it shows the depth of the snow. Keep in mind 10 days ago it was nothing but brown grass in the pasture. The fence posts are 4 feet high!
IIRC they have started to name storms during the summer as well. It does nothing but add to the hype.
