I'm running short of what I planned for this year.I'm almost through my last face cord, which is shoulder wood and it sure isn't feeling like shoulder weather yet. This weekend I will bring over a load of elm, ash that was suppose to be for 2014/2015.
Nope, I'm fine….. About 9 cord on stand by, another 4 could burn if needed got 2016 on pallets, 2017 in driveway ready for CSS
I might need to get into some not quite fully seasoned wood. Depends on how March shapes up. Hopefully this is the last of he real cold coming up these next few days.
I've burned a record amount already this year (burned around 6 cord so far, that's close to what I burn an entire heating season) but I'm running two stoves (pretty much full-time the last two months with the mega cold), but honestly, I still have around 26 cord or so C/S/S, and another 7 cord split and heaped in two huge piles (almost ALL oak), I've already cut enough on our tree jobs to cover what I used this year and THEN some. not to mention I've pulled around 2 cord of standing dead oak and cherry off of the farm, and if we get a little more snow, i'll get some more over there (that's being used for the maple syrup evaporator, if we tap next week). I'm good for wood....but yes, it's been a banner year in terms of cold for sure here in the central Pa mountains, as well as all over the northern part of the country and Canada...... Good post, Loon!
reelcrzy, This is simple if I may please; Don't worry about anyone else but "you"! I can speak for myself but I'm sure I can speak for "most" on the forum. We all have been in your shoes, like you said live and learn. The fix is, GO GIT IT!…. and be prepared. over 30ish+ years of burning, I know what I need {approximately} every year and I give myself a comfort zone, an extra cord. You need to establish your needs and go from there. To be safe, try and go three years ahead, you never know what may come up….
I maybe have 4 weeks worth that is in the shed then hopefully the snow will be down enough to get to the outside stuff....
Working through my 3rd cord. 15 or 16 still split and stacked, 2 or 3 split not stacked and another 7 or so that needs split. I hope I can cut some this weekend. I guess I'm a blessed man. Oh and I could always cut the oak kitchen chairs up if needed
I'm down to 2 face cords for this year of the 4 cord i had ready. I'm not going to take any of next years wood. I'll run the gas furnace when I'm out. I'll have 5 cord ready for next year... Live and learn...
Dam, I don't know much about those but I was talking to a guy just today at work, he says his neighbor has one and he is on about 10 cord. What the hell sense is those things for if they eat so much wood? And people want to complain about my old smoke dragon, been heating nicely through the winter and I'm only on cord # 4
We're about on track even with the wicked winter this year. But I confess that we do burn some propane like out on vacation or when all away at work. This is the first year with 70% of the winter allocation being b.locust and it burns good and long. BL and a ton of extra attic insulation helped big time.
I have plenty left in the stacks but have about a cord left of what I want to burn this year left. The bulk of my other stuff is pin oak that I really dont want to get into this year. Its 1.5 years stacked right now and I really dont want to burn it until next year. I would hate to see oak spitting moisture out in the stove when it will burn so much better next year. Also have a cord of locust that just over a year split but wasnt stacked until this past spring. Not sure what I want to do, Just may grab some standing dead elm for shoulder season this year.
Just started mixing this years oak in with ash that was slated for next year. What goes around comes around. Hopefully next year balances out this year.
I guess I better get a move on. I already burned approx 4 -5 cords this year and will run out soon. Thanks for the pep talk ! cant wait to get out there and start to prepare for the years ahead. I dont have a wood lot or anything so any wood I get is from scavenging wherever and whenever I can.
Thats exactly how I started, now I really don't need to try very hard to find wood. Found places I can cut a lot and people know I cut and burn so I get a lot of calls for people wanting trees gone.
Plenty of wood left but with the cold going well into infinity I will be cutting more this spring then the last several years.
R.C., I don't live in the Emerald forest either! I'm in a residential neighborhood and can almost spit on my neighbors house. I raid, pilliage, scavenage, fight, beg, and have been known to convince people they need a tree taken out of there yard... I stop when I see some fat limbs down, or someone has put to the curb. I keep my 021 in the back of my truck full of gas "nearly" 24/7 in the spring and summer. I live on about 1/3 acre, trust me... If I can do it, you can too. I'm about 9 cord fat, with two fresh cut oak and hickory in the driveway, My wife will get over it!
