We were tossing the idea of buying a half of beef n a whole hog for years....just never did it...maybe this fall?
As far as freezers go....not everybody has the room but we have 4) 5.5 cu. ft. chest freezers n 1) 8 cu.ft. Veggies n such in one....misc. in one...the other 3 holds are meats...
I serviced appliances for 25 years n i still favor chest freezers...uprights are ok however....packaged meats can still slide out when opening the door if not stored right in the freezer (sometimes to prevent this you loose storage space)
I would never own a frost free upright...power outage, component failure, etc. ...your food will thaw 2-3 times faster than a chest. I have seen chest freezers pack full last a week or more with little thawing depending on where it is located. Frost free freazers dries your foods out faster also.
We vacuum pack anything that can be with great success...everything definetly last longer with maintaining good quality n taste.
    Good Luck in your endeavor....
