Mennonites I believe. could be mistaken. They use horses but also ride the Greyhound Bus to town on occasion. I have one young man coming next spring to put seamless eaves trough all around our place and I'll get to know him then. When I found him he was out ploughing with a big team of about 6 horses and the first two were percherons. Now he did had an old chevy 1/2 ton beater in his yard. I offered to move his machine he uses up to our place about 1- -12 miles away from his farm. Another fellow has a gas operated motorized conveyor that puts his corn in the silo with. He sells metal roofing which comes from down south somewhere and is shipped to his farm and then placed inside an old barn mow. He uses a block and tackle on a rail that runs the full length of the mow. When he's not around the frau comes out and does it. Kids of all shapes and sizes running all over the place. Big improvement over what was going on and not going on prior. We were meant to make use of the land and live peacefully together and they do that real well. I think the elders must pray and vote on certain requests and the like in order to grant any special permissions needed to make the community viable. Anyway, as you can tell I'm happy to call them neighbor - either way.

Around here our mennonites are things like cabinet makers, carpenters , builders, farmers, metal roofing and gutters. Fabricators and welding, wood stoves and fireplace tools, countertops etc. Drive trucks have power and the men look like all of us. The women Wear dresses that look like 100 years ago and a little hat like thing similar to what jewish men wear, but lacey.

Around here most of the men have long beards and dress mostly in black. The women wear bonnets and dresses and so forth. I'd guess low German heritage prior to Canada settling. They do all sorts of things just as you mention. Naturally they run the gamut from old order pure and true to people who are fully part of modernity and work in the same places and wear the same get up as all of us do. I've lived as a missionary with the street poor and outcasts in a big city out west and Mennonite farmers (emmigrated from Mexico) from around there used to drive in a van to the Fed Penn on Sunday evenings and we were part of the inmates worship services that the Chappy led. This is quite an amazing world we live in. If we just live it!

I am Jim, living just north of Cincinnati, OH. Joined up to learn a lot more about wood burning and insert options, in hopes of installing an insert in Spring 2016 to fill the current masonry fireplace in my 22 year old home. I learned about wet wood year before last and started my splitting and stacking last year after having 25 Ash trees cut off my lot from the EAB. I do lots of other stuff and figured this would be a good extension to some of my DIY and outdoors passions.

I am a humble soul with minimal tools to get the job done: Stihl MS211, Friskars 27, a Collins 4.5 36in and a 5 ton HF electric splitter.

You have come to the right place. Those sound like some good tools to get you started. You probably will be like everyone here and acquire several more over your obsession with wood burning. You can out the money you safe into tools.
