They did cut out doe days down a few years ago from every friday and saturday from oct 11 to nov 27 then fri and sat after christmas till the first of the year back to just saturdays and even less of them than before??? Can also buy 4 done tags in my game zone to use on non doe days. On done days you can kill up to your 2 deer per day limit of does. I have killed 2 antlered deer at once before and a buck and a doe before as well..
Well yesterday was another crazy rut day, I saw so mushy bucks impost track but I did count up to 13 different bucks before I started seeing the same ones come back. They were running does and out cruising all day. I had two shooters walk past me, the first one I let walk as I wasn't sure if it was big enough. Then around 10am I had a huge old deer cone in with chocolate antlers. I grunted him right to the tree and I messed up and bumped the release before I was settled in and shot too so. Bu wow another awesome day. I'm headed back out now.
Sounds like a great day! I haven't been able to get out at all this week to see what has been going on. It has been a crazy but highly successful week at work .
See hunts like those swags make me wish I could hunt up there somewhere. I have seen 3 bucks chase a done before but never anything like that. I dont see stuff like that down here...no one does. I have a kind of buddy that hunts in illinois each year... I mean big buck country and has killed some monsters. He hunts A+ private farms through friends. He tells stories just like yours swags. Seeing multiple shooters that either never slow up or are too far. Talks about them coming by all day long!!!??????
It isn't like that everywhere in Ohio I have access to and hunt around 200 acres and I don't see it like that at all. I think it is highly dependent on the the property as to what the action is. I even have feeders out and minerals and don't even have that many different bucks on cameras let alone see that many but I do have friends that have property like that and it seems like they have big bucks on their property all the time!
We may get pics of that many bucks on my 130acres. But thats counting spikes and four points and all the year and a half 6 and 8s you see . Had a decent 4.5 year old or older on can first of the season but he has since disappeared.
I hunted the same spot this morning and only saw 1 deer. Just goes to show how the rut can work. If you have the right does around you during the rut the hunting can be amazing. But if the hot does are a mile away you won't be seeing any deer. All depends on having the right deer in the location your hunting. And having plenty of does is key.
I shot a doe a few years back. Walking fast and spooked....a monster buck was 50 yards behind her. Doh!!
Thats the reason I usually dont shoot them. Had a done come bounding down the creek by me one mourning. Behind her about 30 seconds, was like a 4 point behind him about 15 seconds was a small 2.5 year old maybe a 6/7/8??? I dont remember but behind him about 20 seconds comes in a big buck for my area. A 8 point almost 200lb buck with one of those 8 points broken off. Shot him off a trot in front of me. Had I shot the doe or either of the smaller bucks i may not of seen nor killed the one I did.
Much as I hate to say this I usually shot the first deer that walks in front of me. I was taught that might be the only one you see. Antlers never mattered much to me. The old man ( great grandfather ) never shot a deer but taught me hunting was about putting meat on the table. Everyone has there thing. I also can't sit still for very long without getting bored. Seems like I always think of other stuff that needs doing.
I am ADD blessed and have trouble sitting as well. Thats why I leave sometimes to early. Now a days I dont hunt or sit as long as I use to because of what I need to do or my attention span. But when my dad grew up deer were like ghosts. You never saw them so that may of been some of your old mans thinking as well. When I started hunting g we had way more deer than we do now but I still have no trouble seeing deer. The coyotes have put a huge hurt on fawn recoupment. The deer herd in sc has decreased by 30% since 2002. And clemson has a study out proving that coyotes kill as much or more than 70% of that years fawns.
It's all about meat for me too. We have a 4 week season in November. 1 deer limit, must be a buck unless you win an any deer permit in a lottery. I shot an 8 point 228 lb buck about 12 years ago, so I've shot my big deer. Now it's all about the meat for me. Add in the fact that our deer herd isn't anywhere near as big as most other states, I don't let anything pass.
The buck I shot today was right with a doe. Another was cruising and couldn't get him stopped. Even tried yelling and he didn't flinch. Trotting with his mouth open. Rutting hard here.
was golfing last saturday and we had a Doe break across the fairway with a decent buck hot on her 6 , he had his "weapon" deployed which is why the doe i believe was able to outrun him.
