Frozen ground holds more water than thawed ground. As the ground thaws it does so from the top down. So you end up with thawed ground and water sitting on top of an impermiable frost layer. Essentially a temporary swamp.
I've heard more snow this weekend, but I look at our projected temp and I believe we are only going to get rain.
No rain forecast for us, and it was 66 for a high today. All snow around here is gone, except for where the plows left it, or some shady areas. Highs in the 40s Tuesday- Friday it appears.
I took the tractor out for a ride today to check the snow. We've lost about a foot of snow so far but I still had to "V" plow my way through the (around) 2 feet left. It's getting wet and heavy and it "worked" the tractor. Mud season next.
Full blown mud season here. Snow has been almost completely gone for 2 days and highs are in the 50s. Still cool enough for sugaring but the season here is too short to even bother.
Yup it's getting soft. Just came in from plowing off the 2" we got on the drive, so the sun will final clean it tomorrow. I tried to pick up the blade before I got to the edges. Ground's not frozen there anymore. Edit: That was at 10... it's 1:15 now and snowing hard again, but not much accumulating. Too warm.
