I'm out of doors running the woods and rivers all summer long and use the permethrin on my clothes and hat. I spray a bandana with OFF which I wear around my neck or tie around my head as well as my exposed skin. I never wear long pants and I'm near bald and keep my hair short. I pull ticks off all the time and can't remember the last time one bit me but I keep an eye out for 'em.
Chiggers tore me up last summer!! They got me while mowing the grass and I figured it had to be while under the only tree in the yard, I sprayed the tree and didn't get any more chiggers.

Just put the AdvantixII on the dogs Tuesday.
Gets expensive, but I don't like the idea of them bringing the little bastages in the house.

My wife and I were doing some exterior painting. I took a shower and felt an itching on my ankles. I looked down and they were all over me! We had at least 100 deer tick nymphs on each of us. If you think the ticks are small, these nymphs are dammear microscopic! Took us over an hour to pick the bastages off of us.
I'm done spending money on the deet sprays; Ticks get on me even when I spray. They don't seem to get on me much anyway. After spring is over and it starts getting dry here, they are few and far between. I'm not a fan of chemicals, so I may try the vinegar spray and eating garlic....I like garlic anyway. I'm attuned to any itching, and I catch the ticks before they've been on me long. This also isn't as bad as a lot of areas of the country for Lyme disease. Staying out of the woods is not an option for me at this point.

Check into turmeric. You have to start with a low dose, it is spicy and may not agree with your system. There are some contra-indications, like if you are on blood thinners, so check before taking it. It is supposed to take a couple of weeks to start working, but I started seeing relief after four or so days. I had a toe joint that would flare up every couple of months, to where it hurt to walk. The turmeric totally reversed that; I don't even notice the joint now. Besides being an anti-inflammatory, it's also supposed to promote immune system health, is an antioxidant, etc.
