Under those circumstances you might want to give consideration to installing two of them if possible.

The statement you responded to is delusional.
Folks with no experience owning/operating the make/model being discussed here should refrain from disseminating information.
Please take whatever you read here with a large grain of salt. Thank you.

Under such high winds as you described.

    You misunderstand me.

I have a stove with a thermostat. During high winds the thermostat will stay closed and maintain temperature of my stove, but my plate doesn’t have a hole in it like a BK does. So when high sustained winds come, my stove is starved completely of air while a BK is not.

Typically I would say there’s zero chance of these stoves over-firing, my Hitzer, the BK, or any stove with a bi-metal thermostat, but zero chance might be stretching it.

If you recall, I already said I agreed with you that a pipe damper won’t be needed. Didn’t I write that I agreed with you? Yes, I did.

For the sake of those reading this into the future a lot of BK users refer to this thing they call “running on the hole”, where the stove is turned down really low and is running on minimal air, only the air that goes through the hole in the air inlet inside the stat box. The thermostat runs the stove, obviously.

What happens when the wind is blowing across the chimney? The thermostat stays closed longer, that’s what happens.

What is going to happen when the wind blows so hard that too much air is moving through that hole in the inlet that the stove temperature continues to rise?

I’m not suggesting anything, I’m asking a question…and perhaps BKVP is the best to answer my question.

Theoretically, because of the hole in the bi-metallic thermostat there’s always air moving through the stove by design. So, is it possible that these stoves can still over-fire under the right conditions from over-draft during super high sustained winds? I do think it’s possible, yet still unlikely.

Anyone else have a take on this?

I know my Hitzer has a built-in damper, I also have a stove pipe damper, and it has a thermostat…so it runs just like a BK stove minus the hole in the air inlet. I have short chimney and a manometer and I’ve seen what high wind does to my draft readings (sustained) with both dampers fully closed while the air inlet is also closed…let alone a tall chimney and an even windier place. I’ve seen enough wind to keep my solid plate air inlet closed for over an hour trying to maintain my stove temperature setting. ANY air allowed to leak through the stove during that time would have allowed the stove’s temperature to rise above my dial setting and would have kept the air inlet closed even longer.

So a hole constantly open would allow for stove temps to rise during super high sustained winds….at least in my mind. Not saying the rise in temps would over-fire the stove, but I won’t say it isn’t possible either. That hole changes things quite a bit during high sustained winds.

Going back to a pipe damper in the above sustained high wind situation the moderator mentioned, I still believe in that situation, as rare as it may be, the damper may just give back the operator even more control. Otherwise, I agree, it mostly will not be needed.

    EDIT:
I suppose it’s possible that BK has redesigned the air inlet plate from what I’ve seen to one that doesn’t have a hole in it.

Called the Dealer again today, he ordered the ped, will take the cost of the legs off the ped, and they are in stock, so just a matter of shipping time :)

It was like pulling teeth though, I finally figured out he didn't know what lead time is and arguing BK doesn't know. He was talking about when they ship it, not if was in stock or had a lead time :picard:

Anywho, all good, just a week or so delay.

Was just wondering. I knew you ordered pedestal. Thought maybe they were going to let you keep legs as well.

Oh I see, yes, we planned on bringing them back. We didn't even open the box, so they can use them on the next BK they sell with legs :) All of us whole except us being delayed and them keeping track of an extra inventory item :handshake:

I disconnect the pipe; clean it and re install
If stove is cold best to carry it outside..
    Another lesson learned hard way:emb:

  Sounds like my smoking shop vac lol.

Well, change of plans as of like 5 minutes ago, WWW went to dealer. It's now straight up through the roof.

Turns out this cat is NOT directly under the pipe like our old BKK Insert, it's offset, so I can go bottom up with flex rods from inside the stove. Thankfully this sits alot higher than pellet stove, heck, bet I could sit on a step stool and do it.

I really wanted it out of the house because his and kid's breathing issues, but... I can't imagine it's as bad as cleaning the pellet stove and it will only be a couple times a year, vs like 6x/yr on the pellet stove.
