Swags, why not see what you can get a good deal on at your favorite dealers and make a decision from that point.

Base your decision within the realm of the suggestions offered here?

    I really want a MS261:drool: A MS391 would be cool too.

I talked to my Stihl dealer today and can get a 15% discount. I should clarify though that all the money will go to the family not jut the profit. I will be personally buying the saw and donating whatever it brings to the family. So since I'm paying the cost I don't want to go way overboard but am willing to put up around $500. If I get the families permission I will share the story. Never met them but literally cried when I heard the story.

A 261 would be an awesome saw for many of our members here. Perhaps even a 1 saw plan. If it could fit into the budget, that would be my #1 pick. Then it's a tight race between the 291 and a 241. You all have heard me say how much I LOVE the 241 but the 291 kinda shines as an all-around firewood machine.

And if you think the 291 is just like the old MS290, think again. The 291 lost weight (nearly a lb) and the power spec is close enough to call it even. (.04 bhp difference) But having run one a little, the 291 felt a lot less "gutless" than the 290 did and the new spring AV system is MUCH better than the 290's rubber setup. It's just a nicer saw to handle as well, looks/feels narrower than the old 290. The 291 isn't the baby of the family either. The 290/310/390 were all the same weight with bigger engines as you went up in $$. Now, the 271/291 are the same chassis, (with the 291 being the more powerful model) and the 311/391 are bigger, heavier saws.

My 291 sure has done well by me as a firewood machine. I love the thing

That sounds like a dangerous combination that most of us would not be capable of running.

I did consider that, but would like to make a little more for the family. Could maybe do two of those.

I don't know details yet. Once I figure out which saw I will be buying I will post pictures and an auction time. It will likely be a week or so auction so people have time to watch it.

Have you considered auctioning something other than a saw? I'd be curious how much you could make by putting individual 2.6 oz bottles of the Stihl synthetic oil on the block.

Jon1270 has a good idea, how about a selection of high quality B/C combos. I'd bet Terry might help you out on price since he and his wife were the target of a similar kind of thing. Perhaps a selection of Sugihara b/c combos for both HVA & Stihl.

I think that's a great idea! It doesn't have to be just bars, but I bet more money would be raised on smaller items, rather than one large item.

That Solo I have needs a 16" Tsumara, Sugi, Total on it :dex: I'd be bidding on one of those ;)
