When you start thinking about it dealers mark the crap up crazy.

How much is a picco bar and 16" chain? By the time you subtract the retail value of those out that makes the ms170 a $100 power head.

Just like buying printers. They will give them to you basically as they make their money on the ink cartridges.

Unless you refill your own and I am thinking they have figured out now how to make the used cartridges not work after certain dates.

Mostly ebay and treestuff.com. I run both Oregon and Stihl oilmatic chains whichever is cheaper.

Baileys has good prices on the Woodland Pro. It' Carlton just in their box. The only thing is they have limited it to certain types...

By far my one stop shop with true "old fashioned" customer service and great prices is Madsen's out of WA. They offer "two for the price of one" loops of Oregon. They also allow you to buy chain in reels and then they'll loop it for you for $2.50 a loop.

These guys know a ton about everything chainsaw! They will shoot you straight, let you talk to their saw techs, and always seem to work to get you the best price. Their website www.madsens1.com is also a wealth of chiansaw knowledge!

local dealer. All he carries is Oregon LGX and I really like it. Plus I get 18" for about $14 and 20" for $15. Always has it in stock, generally charges me just above his cost on other items. For instance - I bought a powerbox, oil, and some chain last week and was telling him how I needed a file holder. He threw it in the box for free and sold me an intake block off plate for my 576xp for $15.

    Saws are high though...

I buy my chain locally, about $12 or $13 for a 72lgx 20". The Amish keep their prices really low on all saw commodities.

I've tried going to a few of the local Stihl dealers as I'd rather use Stihl chain, but none of them seem to make loops. And I tried the largest dealer in my area that might have made loops, but walked out when the manager tried arguing with me, telling me that Stihl chains were 100% incompatible with Husqvarna saws. I guess he thought that might convince me to buy a Stihl saw??

I buy my Stihl chains at the Stihl dealer. They are usually little more than a $1 and inch.

I was thinking about that a while back. I put a 12'' .050 bar on my MS170. The bar was $30.79 and the chain was $13.70.

Dunno how he ships priority for $4. Lowest commercial base you can get is $5.35 on priority 14 oz. and up.

Local dealer sells Stihl brand chain. It's well worth the few extra dollars just to get to see all the new equipment...

A few buddies and I are placing an order here for about 30 chains and some parts from Bailey's We figured with their 10 loop pricing packs on Woodland Pro we couldn't beat it. 20" for $12.59 24" for about $14 with no shipping. Hard to Beat and we all use the same full chisel chains anyway so buying all the same makes it easier to break up the 10 loops of the different sizes.
