Your right, 'We', as in this generation, has evolved from the days of when it was ok to strike your child. I agree with you, I have never laid a hand on either of my kids. What I saw growing up taught me it was wrong to do that. However, there are plenty of people that grew up in our time seeing the same things who follow what they learned. My folks smoked, I hated it...I don't smoke.

I have seen a parent at daycare that grabs the child by the shoulders and yells. This particular child acts out. I cannot say what is the chicken or the egg, but it kinda' makes sense.

I see nothing at all wrong with cracking a kid on the backside when needed. I got it when needed and so did my kids, now I'm not talking about beating bloody or abuse but correction is the way I look at it. I respect my parents for that and my kids feel the same. Agree or disagree, that's just my 2 cents.

As a point of further discussion, what are the views on how today, kids are instilled the concept of RESPECT vs. the way it was instilled by parents in my generation? Are kids of today as Respectful of other people and their property or less? I'm talking about kids in general as opposed to your individual children.

I work for a vocational school and a lot of the students have little or no respect for our principal. Maybe it's her, but I see students being reprimanded by her and they just give it back to her. When I was a kid and you got in trouble with the principal you said "yes sir and no sir".

I am so grateful we live in a rural area. While we have our share of mouthy people, we also have many more really decent and polite people. I am proud to say that when I am out and about, nearly all I encounter are polite. I walk with a limp and use a cane. Not looking for anything, but there are always those that open doors, offer to assist etc. Somewhere, somehow, there is a core of civility in this community. While I can tell you when I have received poor service, like in a restaurant, I can't say it is because of any one individual. Usually it is the environment these folks are in that fosters the behaviors. I think that holds true to schools and homes.

I think a lot depends on the child. My stepdaughter is pretty sensitive, and just telling her that she was bad and sending her to her room upsets her a LOT. Our first child is due in October, and time will tell how he/she reacts to different punishments. But when I was a kid, making me sit in the corner or going to my room was like winning the lottery compared to getting the belt, or the cedar paddle my dad got “for me”, or even Mom using the fly swatter on the back of my legs which was actually the worst! I got in trouble a lot as a kid, and a spankin’ was about the only punishment that made me think twice about what I was about to do. So like I said, it think it’s the best punishment for some kids, and other’s require something less severe. And it’s up to the parents to decided what’s best for their own kids and is nobody else’s business, especially the governments!

Except in schools. I wish teachers could still rap kid’s knuckles with a ruler, and send the really unruly one’s to the principal’s office for more than just a good talkin’ to! I think the risk of embarrassment and publicly humiliation by swatting would do wonders to the school system.

My son is extremely strong willed (some say he comes by it honestly)...... he gets bare butt spanked from time to time, just like I did.

There is a HUGE difference in proper corporal punishment and a beating. A spanking is meant to inflict moderate pain, not physical harm. A spanking should NEVER be given out of anger and emotion, but rather a calculated correction. I was whipped with a belt MANY times, usually as a result of disobedience. I've never resented one of them, and am a better man because of it today.

On the other hand, I realize that many whippings are given out of anger and emotion. Those typically don't convey the message they should. They're usually too severe, and not delivered with love. Love is the key difference. When correction is delivered with love, it makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD!

Have I always been perfect as a parent? Absolutely not. But the above are the principles I've tried to live by. My heart goes out to those of you, or your siblings, that suffered real abuse.

Don't judge us but ... we use a Taser. Stops temper tantrums quicker than the wooden spoon.
