Made a mention of Asplundh cutting in the rain a couple days ago across the street from my property. I always thought it was a nice straight oak leaner. Well I stopped and looked and it’s a hickory. There’s gotta be at least 30’ of straight trunk before a branch starts. Guessing 24-26” dbh Never met this neighbor. A recluse,,,,,,like me I live in the back 40 of mine and he lives in the back 40 of his. Rang the bell a few times today, no answer. Just returned my call. I can have the wood. Yeehah!! I don’t need any more work but hickory is rare for me. This is the fourth big hickory I got this year and never had any before. I’ll take it. Oh, and the huge White oak laying next to it. That’s a 30”+ tree. I’ll take that too. Little poison ivy but I’ll just run the saw up that. Pics taken from car. I’ll start tomorrow before the other neighbors start thinking about it. There’s a lot more wood there than in the pics. It’s all hiding behind the logs. I’ll do better. And a shot of Brads friends. Took a cruise around the hood this afternoon. Found their staging area in a piece of town property, one town over. Nice town. The crews bring wood there and let the residents go in and cut firewood. Something you don’t see happening much these days. Especially in Ct. There’s wood laying all over again. I’m just getting mine because I’ve seen that leaner for years. We have a history.

On 150 in Yalesville they have that area where they dump road grindings/concrete/gravel etc. It was called the dog pit. Many years back i had a cutting permit to buck and take wood from there. Basically a waiver form from the town. Wasnt much good wood as it was cherry picked (no pun intended). I did cut some from there though. No more permits as scroungers would fight over wood as i was told.
Some better pics. It occurred to me this morning with the nice dry weather coming if I put off any major hauling for a few days I can drive this stuff right into my processing area. Little soupy at the moment. Save a lot of work of dropping these in my yard and working them there or bringing them to the PA later. So just played around a little this morning,,,,,and nailed up a sign!! Mitts off maggots! Hickory 25” at knee height. 21’ trunk. Piece next to it is 11’ not counting the little barber chair. One more underneath in the 8-9’ range. So about 40’ of log still 16” at the 32’ mark. This is the stuff that gets me giddy. 36” White oak at the bottom. With poison ivy all cut off. Hope I don’t get it!! Cut up some of the small stuff. Didn’t take long to hit a rock. Forgot my peavy and tried getting all the way through one too many times. Pulled out the 372 and cut the logs in appropriate lengths to winch on the trailer. Now I’ll wait a bit for the drive to dry out. May grab some of the bucked stuff with the baby trailer and atv.
Dont worry. You know my memory is only good for one week. That’s why I gotta get the jabs in now Hey I’ve burned it. I’ve got a 1/2 cord of Chinese Sumac that’s probably worse. Don’t think anyone anywhere ever bothered figuring out the btu of that stuff.
I was up in your area today. We visited her daughter and BF near Hurd state park. Went to Jessica's lobster shack for ice cream in Marlborough. I was looking at trees of course. Happened upon a catalpa and thought of you. She took a couple pics of it but cant get them to load from a file.
Some of the best Lobster rolls in the state. Did you drive into Hurd? Lot of wood laying around in there. Most of it has been taken. Few decent logs left and assorted scraps.
