I use fallen leaves to mulch flower and shrub gardens for winter protection. Then in the spring I rake them out and use the mulching mower on them. IEven using leaves as garden protection, I still end up mowing leaves in the fall.

I do the same, one big voluminous pile over the Winter collected with the riding mower and then used in Spring and Summer as mulch to help keep the weeds down and for moisture retention.

We generally mulch as we mow.

Too much yardage to try to gather them all up. I should attach the lawn sweeper and collect some for composting though.

    Beautiful pics Dennis.

I blew some leaves last week. No colors yet though.
The maple trees are dropping leaves here. Maybe too much water or not enough sun?.... They're getting black spots on the leaves.

Same here. Was wondering about the black spots. I don't recall them last year.

Nothing much happening here yet (north of Rogers City, MI). A few yellow leaves popping up on the birch and poplars, but not much else.

Our cherry tree has been dropping leaves for a couple weeks. It usually starts late August or early September. Our red maple tends to turn early as well, but continues to hold its leaves for quite a while. They all get mowed into the grass.

    Good info midwinter.

Can't be certain that the Black Tar Fungus is Amungus, but I've noticed spots on a LOT of leaves of late, not only the Maples, but the Ash and Shagbark Hickory as well.

Guess it's time for a leaf burning.
Hope the breeze is from the North, otherwise will smoke out the valley.

I've seen lots of corn cut for silage already. Field corn is drying fast. Saw one field of soy beans combined just 2 days ago. Also see several fields of beets pulled and lots of third cutting of hay down. But today is hot. Crazy...

yooperdave Must have changed fast. There was very little color when we left the UP on the 10th of Sept.

They sure are changing fast! Last week was major color shift for many of the trees.

    Ash are now a yellow/brown and falling/

Maples are still spotty with lots of green stands but lots of stands changing.

Heck, I've even seen a few aspen with their bright yellow/almost orange.

It changes the fastest in the western end of the UP. But only about a week ahead.

Was camping in central VT this weekend and got a pretty heavy frost. Colors should be changing quick after that.
