As long as they have wind shelter you should be fine if you get the larger breeds. when I was reading before I got mine there was a couple of gals up in Alaska posting about keeping birds up there. Thawed water & food and shelter from the wind...

I hear the beer:30 thing! Worked on building a new porch on to the front of my parents house today. Several brothers and a nephew chipping in to help out. Luckily they had the old one tore off before I showed up today. They were able to keep the existing roof and three main post down to the deck. Everything else will be replaced. We repointed some stone on the front wall of the house foundation. Then got the time consuming stuff of getting the post to the new piers they put in yesterday. And then got the framing started. So after the days work a whole bunch of the family showed up, probably about 30+ of us, for their 61st wedding anniversary party. We tried our best to keep that quiet from them. Organized by a one of my sisters, we just had cake and ice cream, strawberry shortcake, and a bunch of good people!

Gas it's nice to have a bunch of help show up for a project like that, provided everyone is self directed in their assigned task...

Plus fresh roasted chicken smells really good in the house when it's cold outside. :)

I guess the women(folk) around you don't get attached too bad.
My GF still tells me stories of her mother wringing chickens off their heads.
I may dip my toe the water on some

Yup. We don't work it to formally. Take our time, try to let one or two people with the most building experience take the lead, and just work together to get it done. We did their back porch last year for them. Framed it in, wired it, insulated it well, installed new big windows and a door, then finished it off on the inside. Made a nice warm place for them to sit and enjoy their back yard. They love it.
