Very sorry to hear about Loki. We lost one of our beagles to the exact same thing when our kids were adolescents. It was hard on all of us, and I know how you feel. Dogs are such an important part of the family, but it's heartbreaking when it's time for them to go.

Condolences for your loss. Losing a faithful companion is very difficult to come to terms with. Hopefully your memories of him chasing groundhogs help you thru this time.

Although not the norm, coyotes attacking LGD (or any dogs), is probably not that unusual under the right circumstances. We are just rarely privy to what the exact circumstance are.
    1. Did the coyotes attack (as in willfully and deliberately seek to engage the dogs), or did they not back down when accosted by the dogs? In my mind, the distinction is important. One is a premeditated unlawfulness versus a stand your ground (or maybe mob) mentality.
    2. It is mating season (at least in this area), so all bets are off on any "normal" behavior.
    3. On the flip side, if pups were born early, the coyotes might be more desperate to feed them.
    4. If perhaps the dogs were quartering different areas of the grounds, the coyotes got bold - they are more likely to attack (or stand their ground against) one dog than several.
    5. Some coyotes are more bold and risk taking to begin with. If the more cautious coyotes that influenced/moderated a pack died/left, the more reckless member(s) will have more sway over the pack.
    6. Or (continuing bullet 5), if a resident pack that was usually mindful of the dangers was killed off and a new pack moved into the territory, their behavior will be more erratic (it may settle down, or may be subject to bullet 5).
    7. If a pack has had success against GSD, perhaps because someone kept 1 dog instead of multiples, that would embolden them.
I could probably think of other things that could influence how a pack behaves. Like people, there are things that will push them to behave in ways that we would not think of as normal.

bogieb I did have a pack of coy-dogs try to lure 2 large pets dogs (130+ pounds) into woods, Both
Dogs stopping at tree line. Which was what lead to me being on wheeler and projectiles flying. They were 2 litters in 5 miles circle. Feeding/protecting young is a natural instinct. my dogs were protecting my kids I had same instinct with better armaments

I had never checked out weather underground. I really dislike the "not even close weather.com"

The local weather station for weather underground is less than a half mile away.

Sorry to hear about the loss of Loki, Ohio dave

Started on my taxes this morning. I'm still waiting on one form, but looks like I pretty much broke even on federal taxes/withholding. I always shoot for zero and this year I'll be within probably $20 of that one way or the other. No free loans to the government from me.

I'm just waiting on my company's W2 to get released. I'm champing at the bit to get going on taxes. The feds owe me. Last year I had mine done right away as soon as the W-2's were released on our software.
