Unfortunately that one is a bit out of my price range for now, but I have looked at similar others that were slightly older or a few more miles and a bit cheaper. If I wait till spring, my budget will be greater and I may even be able to swing brand new. However, I'll keep a weather eye out in the meantime and may get lucky.

I inquired about this one as well, but the quote came back a couple thousand higher. The listed price was to buy "as is".
I don't like those tactics, and that extra couple thousand is too much. Also a nice truck though.

Unless you are in a position where you are well enough off to not even really have a budget, I'd advise against buying new...that $10k hit you take when it's driven off the lot is a killer!
I'm a bit proponent of just laying in wait for the right deal to come along, and when it does, pounce fast!
That has worked well for me on the last several vehicles...

I definitely hear you there, and there was a time I said I'd never consider it. But those were the days when you could get a truck maybe 8-10 years old, 80-100K miles, in good shape for about $4,000 - $5,000 and get at least 3 or 4 years out of it. Worked out to around $100 a month. A little more wrenching on wear and tear items, maybe patching a little rust, but still by far the cheapest set of wheels in the long run.

But the market now, such a truck costs around $20,000. makes buying new not such a crazy investment in comparison.

On one hand, I'm so used to doing most of my own work that factory warranty seems like as much inconvenience as it is peace of mind. It is, like you say, a big hit the second you drive away, not to mention feeling like a bull in a china shop when you're used to driving old stuff. Plus, it's a little easier to gauge whether a used truck is a lemon, mechanically. But then, in the northeast, rust is the bigger problem, and it's easier to keep it from happening if the truck is protected from new. You can buy an older truck that looks clean, but the rust has barely started under the paint and and it's harder to keep it from getting serious from there on out. And it can get worse fast once it starts.

On the other hand, buying new, its a little easier to get exactly what you want, with the option to order it if you can't find it. it must be kind of a nice feeling to know you're the original owner, and assuming you don't get a lemon, you should have a truck for at least 10-12 years, probably longer if taken care of well. And the longer I can go without frequenting the dealer again, the better :BrianK:.
It can seem nice having something different every 2-4 years, but the buying process isn't so fun, and when you're compromising what you want because of a good deal, it gets old quick. And I've been through having to find something quick, or else spend way too much to patch up a vehicle that still won't last much longer anyway, it's no fun. The mentality of driving it till the moment it dies doesn't work for me now.

Prime example, the truck I have now. 2014, bought in June 2023. Cost almost $20,000, plus tax and fees which made it 24,000. (Bought a very similar truck, almost exactly same age and mileage at the time, for $4500 in 2013). Two years later, it's still a solid truck, but it's 11 years old, needed a few repairs, does have a couple rust spots starting, and may go on for a long time without needing major work, or may not. I've learned not to be optimistic about machinery.
A dealer offered me $1,000 for my truck recently. Even if I got 4 times as much privately, that's a huge loss over a couple years. I bought my truck in the middle of the crazy shortage and was lucky to find what I did. The shortage is over now, but the prices are still nearly as crazy and likely to remain so for some time. Buying a truck in that age range is no longer justifiable.

Compare that to twice as much money for new, but a truck which I'd have for several times as long before it reaches that age. Finding something used but nearly new seems like a good compromise, but since very few customers buy the base model I'd be happy with, I could be looking at a smaller difference in the long run. (Basically, a used mid range truck that's $40K because it cost $60K new, vs a new basic truck for $50K. For example.)

It's a big decision, and I'm certainly holding out for the right one.

In this day and age, it's really a preference thing than one really being better than the other. They all have their troubles, they all come with warranties.

That being said, I love GM trucks up till the turn of the century, and I don't mind the cat eye generation. After that, few of them appeal to me.

The 70s, 80s and (earlier) 90s was the era when I loved all the "big 3" trucks. Pretty much any other point in time, I'd strongly prefer one over another.

I had all GM products up to the last purchase. Couldn't find a 3/4 ton regular cab long bed used. The Ford popped up and a bunch of my friends destroyed me over that purchase. Like it so far other than the drivers electric door lock has quit working. I hope this truck lasts me until i dont need a truck anymore

Looks like 4 dealerships between us and Canada were doing it. We saw one somewhere last year locally.
