Only one that was dropping Hickory Nuts on the deck (Luckily the majority of it had a roof)! LOL

We have a bunch of Shagbark trees. I thought the nuts went in a 3 year cycle. Last year there were lots, this year not many, and next year a medium amount.
Dr. Google says they have heavy crops every 1-3 years and lesser crops in alternating years.

Looks just like my parking spot at home. 2022 was a mast year for my double trunk red oak tree, so I guess it was due again.

You ain't kidding!  Admittedly, that's the line I blew about 10ft away from the house and I've already blown a line like that once.

I'm pretty sure this one's a pin oak. Red oak family regardless. Aren't you the resident oak expert?

By no stretch of the imagination am I an oak expert   I'm familiar with a few types in my area, that's all. Yours could possibly be a big pin oak (the normally smooth bark gets rougher as they get much, much older) For sure it's in the red oak family. If you had close up leaf pictures it would narrow it down. For firewood purposes I'd simply call it red though :)
Here's a good example of two very different aged pin oaks planted in my town. The old behemoth looks a lot like yours.

Here's about best I can get. Closest leaves are about 25ft away.

This one's 100ft+ away. Camera zooms are amazing.

Looks like pin to me. The leaf sinuses are cut pretty deep.

I do not miss not having oak treas in the yard for that very reason. At my lst place, there were years it was treacherous to walk unless you swept all the acorns away from where you were walking.

I love this. The sound of the stationary engines is mesmerising. I would put an L shape stop on the log holder to get the logs exactly the same length, but he doesn't do a bad job by eye.

I really like listening to the old engines. Especially the throttle governored type vs the hit him.
