Chilling out before I crash. Just finished several 12 hour days. Now a couple days off. Hope to get a saw out tomorrow and cut some firewood.

Found what looks to be an old power pole in the woods. Not sure how old. The wood is in pretty bad shape. I raked around where I found it and couldn’t find any insulators. IMG_1097.jpeg

Since I know nothing, this might be a stupid question, but maybe a telegraph pole instead of electric?

I've got to load up the truck bed with some firewood for our friends tonight. They're having fire in the fire pit on the patio and we're coming over for dinner and drinks. Gotta be there at 2 pm and we have tequila that needs to be bought before we head down, so I'll need to get it there sooner rather than later.
I'll have to unbury some of the campfire wood from my recent cutting, which means I'll need to run the splitter and split more of the box elder and maybe some of the Ash to get to it.

It all needs to be split anyway and this way the outside firewood will be separated better.

I think you are correct. After looking at the pole again it has holes in it for threaded wooden inserts that insulators would be on. They’re pretty much gone but that’s not surprising given how old it may be.

The remains of a threaded insert?

There is a trail that has something like this maybe 20 min from my house I might go check it out in the spring and see if they’re the same. If I follow where I found the first pole there’s probably a line of them.

It’s incredible the hardware looks as good as it does it was on the ground and covered in wet leaves. I’ve seen fasteners rot after being a couple years old nowadays.

Where I found it used to be a huge coal, timber, clay area in the mid 1800s. There is the remnants of a canal and railroad that is now just a historic train ride.

So I had to use the trailer to bring the grapple bucket my cousin is borrowing me. As I was backing into his son’s driveway to drop it off, I noticed that the wheel was wobbling something fierce.

the plan this spring was to do bearings and brakes.

oh well. Now I get to replace the rear axle. The spindle itself is trashed.

House for sale in Recontre East, a community on our south coast with barely over 100 people, no cars or trucks and more than an hour by ferry to the nearest modern road.

While I'm somewhat fascinated with these relics of the days gone by, when a boat often served the same purpose as a truck does today, in areas like here, and made communities on small coastal islands viable (Although this particular community isn't on a small island, but simply has no road access to this day), I have to wonder how they still manage to go about living in the 21st century in a lot of other regards. I know they usually have a general store which carries groceries and probably a laundry list of assorted housewares and hardwares, but with the access to the outside world being a small pedestrian ferry that can't carry cars, I wonder how the goods get there. Does a truck meet the ferry and offload the orders by hand, or is the store owner somehow getting to other retail outlets and buying product to resell? I imagine the prices may have to be a little higher than normal. And most of the homes look to have plenty of modern materials such as vinyl siding, asphalt shingles or other alternatives equally bulky to handle. And fridges and similar appliances? Couches or beds?
Even once you get off the ferry, you're still in a small community that's maybe close to an hour from a larger area where you'll find supermarkets, building supply or furniture stores etc. Do they arrange to have a store deliver to the ferry (or someone's own boat)? And they do use gasoline and other fuels for ATVs, boats, and probably furnaces and generators etc. If the ferry can't carry cars, a fuel tanker certainly isn't coming aboard so getting fuel to the community must be a laborious task.
On the other hand, many residents possibly have friends or relatives on the outside who may favor them with occasional rides to go shopping.

For those who are born and raised in such communities, especially those who grow old there, it must be a novelty and possibly somewhat scary thing to go visit a place with a few traffic lights to its name, let alone to think about moving. And they are virtually crime free, as far as things like robbery and such. (Who's gonna burgle a house when 100 people know each other and you have to wait for a ferry to make your getaway?)
But, it must also be scary to be in an isolated community when shortages of necessities can easily happen due to transportation malfunctions. Even compared to a tiny village of a few dozen people with road access, it seems like a whole other world.

This house may have all your modern conveniences, but for the most part the decor could certainly still pass for a couple generations ago. And the surroundings are indeed beautiful....

I have wondered for a while if veterinarians were in it for the animals or the money. I had an encounter today that convinced me it's all about money.

Sorry that you had that experience. I know my last vet clinic, which closed during the shut downs (they were all getting up there in age, so really, it was a good time for them to retire), could not have possibly been in it for the money.

I have a new vet clinic that I started going to last summer - all cats were on a 3 year schedule for shots so didn't need them before then. This place is a bit more expensive. But, I'll bet much of that has to be from the prices that rose by 30-40% on nearly everything during that time.

I couldn't get blood tests, shots, check up and descaling of teeth done for the amount they charged. Heck, I got hit paying for my annual blood tests in fall of 2022 and that was right around $400.
