We bought these 25 years ago or so. Thats whats left of the original oil that we got with them. I took these pictures a few minutes ago. They have always worked. I've never heard of lamp oil going bad.

Haven't heard of that either, but......?

I had a tank of fuel oil outside at the cottage that had been there for years. Used it a bit every year for decades. People said that goes bad also but never had any troubles with it. Even used it for tractor fuel without any issues.

The only thing I've seen is black algae in a bulk diesel fuel tank that sat outside for years getting little usage. It clogged up the tractor fuel filters.

Maybe the anti-freeze (whatever it's called) additive helped prevent that?

There are anti microbial addictives you can buy. I think I use bioshield in my tank even though mine is inside and only 50 gallons.

Edit... Bio Kleen is what I use.

If there is already algae, that stuff will clean it up...and plug the crap outta the filters for a while!

Yep. Its why I'm proactive after seeing what happened with that outside diesel tank at a place I worked.

Bummer! We have candles but it'd be nice to have a different back up. We have propane lantern, but only one.

Eggshooterist , would you know what brand of lamp oil you have?

Not the red, original stuff, but I have some clear oil with a 2008 date on the bottle. I'll get the name and do a lamp oil test and share what happens here.

Had to replace the temperature control unit on the boiler, but up and running again. Then played on the tractor hauling nice rounds up for splitting. Good to have a day with no reason to leave the property.

    wonderful weather, too.

Maybe I got a bad batch of oil. I had a couple of quarts that I got before Hurricane Bob (in the 90's). The lamps ran fine on it during that time. I stored them in a closet I tihnk 1 was 1/2 full and the other hadn't been opened. When I needed the lamps again several years later (might have been in '08, or it might have been a few years earlier), the lamp fuel that was already in the lamps wouldn't light up. We had 4-5 lamps, and none of them would light. I emptied them and put in new stuff (which stunk badly - not how it normally smells), and still no lighting.

But searching the interwebz, everyone seems to be in agreement that it doesn't go bad - so I don't know what was up.

Last weekend, I let Windows do one of its updates (I have them set on a 2 week hold), and that didn't fix the problem. On the 17th a couple of HP updates showed up. So I installed them. Nope, no joy. This past Tuesday I let the most recent patch for Windows go thru. It didn't seem to help either (note, after every update/patch, I reboot).

Wednesday morning I went to start the computer, and everything was off including my router and modem. One of the darn cats had apparently stepped on the power button to the UPS long enough to turn it off while I was sleeping. So I crawled under the desk and got that restarted. Once everything was running again, my computer couldn't find the network even though my router showed that it was all set. So I had to start unplugging and plugging stuff in.

Hu, after going thru that ritual, the computer's sleep mode started functioning. So, now I don't know if somewhere in the last Win update there was a fix that just didn't take after the 1st reboot and took a total power off situation to fix, or if a loose connection caused the problem all along (seems like that would be weird, but hey, you never know). The sleep mode has worked fine since then both when I actively put it to sleep or when it goes to sleep after 15 minutes of non-use.

Maybe it just didn't like that I'd started looking at computer online the night before ;)
