Let us know how that goes. Was it a purchased potted tree? I ask because I know they have a taproot, and transplanting then from the woods is a difficult thing to try.

Yes I bought it from a nursery. Most of the potting soil fell away from the tap. Buds are swollen, so if I do my job, it should survive.

I used my buddy's pole saw today. It's a little finicky, but it works. Some off brand, maxtra.

I cut the ash branches I could get to, which will make for less work with all the branches when the those trees come down.

I also took the Christmas wreath down from the front of the house, brought a gorilla cart full of wood into the garage from the patio stack, emptied ashes from the stove, and washed my truck in the driveway. Good enough for a day off.

Tomorrow I'll have to break out a saw and cut up and haul those ash branches away. Maybe I'll start the fire pit and burn the small stuff and put the usable pieces in the wood shed for 2 winters from now.

Have a 50 gallon now, may go to 75 if cost is not much difference. Will look at tankless, but I think cost will be an issue. We are on natural gas and no plan to go electric.
On the plus side, chanced turning on the water and gas to the current heater and no leaks. So we all cleaned up and I turned it back off when done. Good to know we can have limited hot water until Thursday.

I would love a longer shower, found a tankless on sale and bought it. papadave warned me about the electric hook ups, our electrician friend was over, we needed a couple extra "x" amp fuse things in the fuse box and other costs, I was able to return it. Food for thought...

Our previous home we had put a large jet tub in. Yes, bath tub but had jets, anyway we ended up with 2 water heaters in tandem (so we could fill the whole tub if we wanted to). We never ran out of hot water.

Here, one 40 gal and depending on how cold it is outside and under the house = how long my shower is. I'm not shelling out $$ to change it til we win the lottery :)

A tankless heater will need to be sized based on the lowest-temp. incoming water source. NG is the way to go, but plan to go larger on the "tankless" than you would think you'd need. I installed a Bosch in a previous home, went too small. Incoming water temp. was 36* and it took a lot of juice to get it to 102* max., for a single point of use.
Washing clothes and take a shower at the same time? forget-a-bou-it... But I still like the idea of tankless.
Just have to size it correctly based on usage and local conditions, and maybe supplement it with "point-of-use" in-line heaters.
Electric only "tankless" would cost a fortune unless you lived in Florida.

    Happy Sunday everyone.

One of the stray cats we brought into the house this winter, woke me up but jumping up to see me by jumping up on the bed and landing directly where any man doesn't want a cat to land. :)

Hard to get mad at her. For a stray she is really a good cat.

We have a natural gas tankless water heater. We have half inch pipe in the house, and the water heater is designed for three quarter inch, so the system is a little throttled by the amount of water coming in. We can still take a shower and run the dishwasher at the same time. The water heater should be flushed with white vinegar at least every year. Ours is a Rheem. We also had to have a ductwork system to exhaust the natural gas combustion fumes to the outside. The tankless is also a little noisy, it makes low frequency humming noises, which I think the cat hears better than we do.

Be sure to check for rebates with your power company. There usually are incentives for upgrading to efficient appliances.

On the plus side, our gas line/meter were just replaced a couple years ago due to a know-it-all retaining wall contractor. I requested several time for him to call diggers hotline, but noooo. Well, big shocker when he cut it.  We got so lucky when the provider said the line was not installed properly with the wrong pipe (1/2" at best) plus it was like they just laid it on the ground and then poured the driveway so they covered the cost and did not fine us. At least the wall they did turned out nice and should last until the end of days.
50 gallon is $1299 installed and we have never had an issue with running out of hot water. They need to come out to give a quote for the 75 gallon, but we should have plenty of room so hoping just a few hundred more for it. I've heard roomers that the tankless are quite expensive with a fair amount of labor ($4,000 area) so just don't see the need for spending that much.
