Yesterday my son's scout troop went to Morristown National Historical Park. That is where Washington and his Army encamped for the winter of 1779-80. For most of the day we hiked around Jockey Hollow where the soldiers camped (and froze their butts off in a winter that was worse than last winter's and didn't have much to eat). In the late afternoon we toured the mansion in town that was Washington's HQ. We happened to be finishing the tour at dusk and the ranger asked if the scouts would like to help take the flag down and fold it up. So of course they helped. This is a big flag that took a bunch of them to hold while folding and they did a good job doing it. I'm pretty sure that the significance of what they were doing was lost to most of them. (As exhibited by my knuckle-headed son who didn't want to help.) Because if what went on in there, in the house behind them, 235 years ago was unsuccessful we wouldn't have been standing there doing what we did yesterday. I will say that many of the leaders did notice it and I'll say it was probably one of the most gratifying experiences that I have had as a Scout leader. As far as a chance happening it was hands down the best.

And personally I used to live over the hill from Jockey Hollow for several years. I used to go hike/bike ride there all the time. I never paid attention to much of the history there at all. (And your not supposed to if you live there, right?) I know the park like the back of my hand but had no clue as to what really went on there till we did the tour yesterday. After learning all that happened there, the funny anecdote, at least to me was that during one of the big snowstorms of '94 I decided to go take a hike up there. Day off from work, single and home alone, snowing like a banshee, I wanted to go out and play. So I put on my snowshoes, walked up over the hill, and was touring around, having a great time while the storm was howling. It was much the same weather that the Continental Army lived through that winter. So later in the afternoon I was walking along a road that had been plowed and a ranger came across me and told me that the park was closed and I had to leave. I will give credit to the ranger for letting me walk in a direction further into the park to get to the other side where I lived. But it was somewhat ironic as that kind of weather was exactly what the soldiers lived through. It is part of what that park is about yet you aren't allowed to take advantage of the opportunity to go experience it. Unless you sneak in and don't get caught.

The only explanation I can fathom is that it's very inexpensive tree, and that the manufacturer used a 2 sided female cord on the top part, instead of terminating with a bulb like the strings I am used to? Maybe so one could add additional lights?

It is amazing what a small world we live in. I lived in that area from 1957 until I moved north in 1989. A lot of good memories during those years. Back when Jersey was a decent place to live in.

Just as long as they didn't have power coming out of one of them when the other was plugged in. Otherwise you have the electrical equivalent of a double bit ax being used as a pendulum it cuts to the left and it cuts to the right.

The female on top is for a lit star/tree topper
I'd assume the other male is to parallel the two halves of the tree if that's how it came?

Tonight I ended up watching a show or CNN movie called Dinosaur 13. 2 hours long. Interesting if you ever get a chance to see it.

I raked and cleaned the front lawn with good intentions of putting a few Xmas lights on the front bushes BUT, the lights never came to be. Pats game started at 1 and the nap started at 4. :)
