Well, I’m happy to report back that the forestry department got back to me. The trees I saw marked for removal are spoken for by a third party making lumber out of them. However, the state was more than happy to give me an application for a cutting permit. They’re working on a few spots statewide and are happy to issue cutting permits. They charge $30 a cord, which I think is pretty reasonable. Depending on how many cords you buy, they give you between one and two months to cut and remove the trees. I think I’m going to have a go at it in the spring. Looking forward to it :)

I would definitely do it. We have the same program here in NY, but the nearest places are hours away and I’d have to rent something big enough to get the wood back. Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

Yeah I was confused at first because it says right on their website that the program was discontinued... yet this forester says they're still issuing permits. No matter, I'll give it a shot. I live in central Connecticut so matter where they would authorize me to cut, I'm no more than an hour from home. It beats always looking out on the side of the road for scraps to scrounge anyway. I can always borrow a trailer to make it worth my while too. I figure I'll start with a couple cords, which is manageable I think.

I checked about five years ago and our program might have stopped. The town used to drop wood they took off the highways at our houses when they had it. No more.

Now that, I'd jump all over, even at $30 a cord

    "My friend"

"I had a friend, a half decent guy,
Didn't always succeed, but he always tried,
Hard to say what went wrong first, but he went off the straight path,
Went down a long winding road and he lost his way back.

Didn't get along well, with his mom or his dad,
Wasn't all his fault, equal blame to be had.
Maybe they both tried, but they didn't know how,
But they grew estranged and it don't matter now.

Had a child with a woman, fell out of love,
Tried to get his child back, couldn't pull it off.
Had a problem with drink, didn't help his case,
But it's one vicious cycle, more he failed, more he drank.

For a while, seemed he was doing so well,
He was trying his best, I was trying to help.

Had a school course half done, and he went back and passed.
Seemed like he was back on the straight path at last.

But he lost his way again, and he opened a drink.
Made a mistake, spent some time in the clink.
A fight happened, wasn't all his fault I don't think,
Lost the room where he lived, ended up on the street.

I held out for him as long as I could,
Watched him go down the wrong path, maybe longer than I should.
I don't have to live with the guilt of abandonment,
Watched till he went out of sight, but I couldn't go with.

My friend gave up on life,
Hauled up his sleeve, took out his knife.
Made a cut, let it flow,
Wrote me a note, let me know."

The wood the town dropped off for free was done by a list so when your name came around they’d call you. It was cheaper for the town than getting it removed from the town facility. I have no idea what they do with it now other than they told us they stopped giving it to homeowners.

I can’t like this one, but it was very powerful, and sad.

I like the way you portray the situation but not the heartache that goes with the story. For some of us it probably hits very close to home.

They probably sell it as mulch. That's what our town does. They take all the trees, even nice firewood tree trunks and shred it into mulch.
When we bought some fun the town of was like 15 bucks for dump truck full. This was a big county plow truck dump bed. How ever many yards those are, but it was a lot.

I'd pay them 3x as much for a load of the unprocessed mostly ash and maple trunks they are grinding up. It would be less work for them, and more money.
