Did you ever find out what the cause of the stuck damper was? After reading your story I'd say that's enough cause for concern. Imagine what the situation could have been like if you were not there.
I'm glad you were able to get things under control, GLO

1"-3" for Sunday. What a mild winter! We traveled to Colorado today, the trees still had dead leaves on them. I don't remember seeing that in over 40 winters down there. Either the snow, the wind, or both always take them down. Strange winter here. Sorry for you all in brunt of the snow/ice/muck out east.

Getting some caffeine flowing. Time to go up to the parents house pretty soon and take their garbage and my garbage to the dump. He will have quite a load from the back porch remodel. Then I hope to be able to get the gate hung on the camp road, finally. I think I will have enough time this morning. I have to end working by 11:30 to take daughter to her first basketball game. Mommy has to take the son to his first basketball game in another town 20 minutes away at the same time.

The Old Mill stove, that was here when we bought this place, would run away like that all the time. Only time I burned was when I could be right there all the time. While there, I had the chance to watch the effects of re-igniting of gases in the pipe... would have blown it off the thimble if I hadn't wired it to the chimney. That type stove was literally a box with an 8" stove pipe. We got rid of it after a few burns.

We did that same thing for years Gas. Daughter in one direction, son in another... for B-Ball season and summer B-Ball too. Loved it... sorta.

Ya. I like watching them play. Sometimes tough when I have so much I need to get done at the house and camp, but that's okay. Unfortunately at this age it is not as exciting as when they get older. I have been through all this with my older daughter. She is now 23 and recently moved away to S.C. :( She is going to be able to make it home for Christmas though!

I have to work today, so I made a big breakfast for myself. Now I have to sneak out of the house before my wife realizes that I cooked the bacon in the microwave without covering it. o_O

The cause, is some debris getting back there stuck in it... possibly a piece of charcoal or bit of crumbled stove cement. The question is how. When this happened last year I knew it was something that I missed cleaning it out after my big rebuild project. I have to wait for it to be stone cold to get back there feel around and see what it is this time.

The VC is kinda like a european sportscar. When its working its awesome, but its soooo complicated there area lot of things that can go wrong. the way its designed, the primary air enters at the bottom rear, then flows through channels in the floor around the ash pan,up through the double side walls and into the airwash manifold above the front door. The primary air control is a small weighted door in the back that sits in an angled opening so that if the control cable broke it would naturally close under its own weight. Its controlled by a cable that attaches to the door with a set screw that you can get to from outside (for adjusting) and the cable runs through the channel up into the side wall of the stove where it attaches to the bimetallic thermostat on the control handle mechanism.

The inner side walls of the stove just bolt in, and you can remove them to get to the cable mechanism to repair/replace it. I had all this apart when I was rebuilding the stove 2 years ago, and stuffed rags into the channels to stop debris falling back there but obviously missed some. I *thought* i cleaned it all out when i had this runaway last year for the same reason but maybe I missed something... or maybe some new junk got in, but I cant figure out how.

Anyway, all is well this morning, as soon as I got it shut it last night it settled right back down to 400 and cruised normally all night. Ive got a welt on my wrist for my trouble but luckily no other damage (note to self, wear gloves when crawling behind a 750F stove!!)

Maybe on a stretch where you have some 40 deg weather you can go to the main heater for a few hours while you take a look see when the Encore is cooled. They are calling for low 40's out my way for mon and tues.

I finally found time to hang the gate. But ran out of time to completely finish. LOL. I still have to install the cable. But that will come later today or tomorrow.

We had to move the post over that the gate hangs on because we hit a rock. And I wanted that post 4 feet down for sure. It is hard to see in the picture. But my solution to the gate being short was to just use some galvanized pipe to make a bracket to come over and meat the gate for the chain. The gate is galvanized as well so it looks like it matches. All pieces are 1" bought at Lowes with threaded ends and two floor flanges made it a nice simple and easy finish.
