That’s like when CFLs were the rage. If you used them for short periods of time it cost more to use them. The startup electricity they used each time you turned them on cost more than an hour's worth of continuous operation.

Our new fridge has LEDs. Our old one didn't. While I never did have to change the bulbs in the fridge, the incandescent bulbs of the old fridge did make a lot of heat. Heat in a fridge is kinda counterproductive. Granted the only time that it would ever really make an issue is if a door switch failed and the lights started on while the fridge would try to overcome that heat.

I will say that my wife loves the look of the LED lights in the new fridge. Most home lighting she is not a fan of led lights, something about the color, but she likes the LEDs in my truck, on the fish tank, and the LED flashlights....

I think that startup cost was exaggerated at first. I think mythbusters debunked that theory. However ,CFL's don't instantly get bright, unlike LED or incandescent. In cold weather some CFL's were not good at all, some not even starting. LEDs solved all of these issues. Really, LEDs came out soon enough after CFL's were introduced, that the LEDs really killed the CFL's off. At first CFL's were still cost effective. Now, you can get LEDs for so little that that is the way to go in many instances.

Maybe really really old ones from the fifties, but more modern cfl the startup surge was /is rather insignificant. Certainly not nothing. I think more important than anything (beyond the flickering bothering some people) is they aren't a good design for a lot of on/off cycles. They supposedly will have short life span with a high duty cycle. How much shorter is probably exaggerated too.
I like LEDs, they can actually save quite a bit of $, but I've also recently bought some cheap ones that started flickering after about 6 weeks. There's certainly some junk out there, just like there was when the tech was still new (incandescent replacements).

Two years ago I changed all the lights (except microwave and stove, then a 2 CFLs in attic) over to LEDs, and it dramatically dropped my bills.

Even though I had a mixture of regular bulbs and CFLs I still save around 15 bucks a month.

There are a few applications where LEDs get on my nerves (like in garage) but once you find purpose built lights, it hides LEDs short falls pretty well.

Caffeine going down in the form of V-8 Fushion Energy Black Cherry flavor. Heading to the gym early for a workout with my son. Then off to the enjoyment center for a while.

There are different "tones" of LED's. Some are more yellow (warm) (which I dislike) and some more "blue" (cool). I usually like the cooler ones better as they are a whiter, brighter light to me. Although in smaller rooms, such as my office or bedrooms, I either still have original incandescent bulbs (from when I moved in 6 years ago), or have warmer hued LEDs. I think in those instances, the cooler lights would be too much.

I had can lights installed in my shop and garage, installed LED bulbs, and really like them. Maybe it is a difference again of the cool or warm hues - definitely need the cool tones for those conditions. Or maybe it is something else for you.

Getting older and needing more light for these tired abused worn out eyes of mine, I slowly change over to led. But here, we choose the "daylight" version of the led bulbs.

I replaced the 4 incandescent bulbs over the pool table with led and it is noticeably better.

I need to change all the recessed lights on my front, and enclosed porch this spring. Theres 8 cans in front, and I think 10-12 cans on the enclosed porch. Most of the regular bulbs in the house have already been converted.

Just don't go too blue on the color. The fog lights I got to replace the incandescent fog bulbs on my truck (the only external non LED lights on my truck I got are blue. Too blue for my liking. I'll be swapping those out when it gets nicer outside.

I wanted to get rid of the yellowy fog lights and go more crisp white like the led headlights, but I ordered the ice blue color instead going to get a blueish tint. Nope. Super blue...
