Had a camera taken from my pick-up many years ago. It was in the case, which was behind the passenger seat....on the floor. The truck was probably only 2 feet from a fence, 70 feet up the driveway, right in front of the garage.
Ins. co. asked if there was any damage, and I said no. They asked if the door was locked, and I again said no. I was waiting for a claim denial, as if it were my fault someone stole something from me.
Less than 5 miles from the southern border with the city of Detroit.
We have a lot of snowbirds here, and the newspaper prints a police report summary every week. Invariably, there are break-ins at a lot of those places.
    Bad guys are everywhere.

I get it papadave I think we have different life experiences. I grew up with a 67 convertible vehicle, that I worked and paid for. To replace the convertible top when it got knifed was $1800. There is nothing in the car worth $1800!
Moreover, My house is absolutely full of windows and glass doors. With a quarter mile drive anybody that wants to get in could smash a window and walk in with nobody noticing until we got home.. not much in house of value to eBay.. I will have a picture of you at works cloud drive.

wildwest , that reminds me of when we bought our current house. Move in day we were locked out. All of the keys we were given were incorrect and I had a moving crew on the job working per hour. I had to have my wife make a knee/ locked hand step and I was able to creep into the bathroom window as it wasn't latched.

Breaking into your own home on moving in day after all the papers were signed is just wrong... Luckily I didn't break anything, although I almost busted my face on the toilet bowl that was right next to that window in had to crawl in.

How about instead of getting more spare keys, getting at least one electronic lock so all you have to do is punch a couple of buttons. One of the best thing I did was put electronic deadbolt on the garage entry door, and and electric door lock on the back door. Now I can't be locked out. I've had them for a couple or 3 years and just changed the batteries before Christmas. and that was only to ensure they didn't die while the pet/house sitter needed access. Plus, I coded a separate number for her and could wipe it out after I got home.

Bonus, since I already had Kwikset locks, and I bought Kwikset Smartkey electronic locks, I was able to key them to my original house key. Oh yeah, I didn't have to change the innards either

We went for a walk yesterday and 99 asked "do you have the house key?"

Yup. I always have the key.

"Oh no you don't! Remember the time you raised me to crawl through the window? And the other time that.... and again at the cottage...…"

    Yeah, I remember!

    You're not alone wildwest !

I HATE having keys in my pocket. Drives me crazy. My key ring has been in my car for 3 years, only time I have touched it was recently to move it to the new car. The last two cars were push button start, so I just stick a key fob in my pocket.

We never lock the house during the day now that we have my Jack Assparagus dog. I dare someone to try and come in, his sole mission in life is to guard the house it seems.

Before we got him, I bought one of those keypad door knobs for my basement shop door, and would just use that as my entrance. Never have to worry about being locked out. Like bogieb I replaced the batteries at 3 years. Wish I got the deadbolt instead, it's a total PITA when I'm coming and going from the shop working outside.

It is easy, basically put the key in and follow directions...Only 2 or 3 steps if I remember.
