Dino arrived home 1.5 hours early from an out of town appointment today. Grabbed a quick nap and is now FISHING :dancer: I think this is the 3rd time since 2010, this from a previous hunting/fishing nut. He should have atleast an hour before picking up the lil one in town.

On the flip side, I'm glad it's raining. I was scheduled to work on a frame we are building but I was so in need of a day off. Then again, the owner pulled a permit to work on monday so I'm glad I was off today.

The sweep came this morning, I got a 8 oz cupfull of powdery dust...gotta love that.

Put the stove flue right back on and started the IS. It's cold and raw today :)

Red. In fact the same red that was there originally...

Burning some standing dead small stuff that I dragged out of the woods and cut up just for the pit. Its not burning so great though, maybe not very dry. Just dont want to use the good 3 year wood in the pit ;)

I'm drinking a Weihenstephaner Oktoberfest from my stash of Oktoberfests (Hacker Pschoor, Paulaner, Weihn, Becks, Sam so far this year)

20141011_120023.jpg 20141011_120125.jpg My latest project. 95% done. Just got to change a few switches and add pulls switches to a couple lights. Decided to reswirl the patch area. Got to do that over. Left handed and swirled it backwards. It's ok cause it's not thick enough anyways. 20141011_120031.jpg

I had a Paulaner Oktoberfest yesterday at dinner. This particular Bistro had a nice lineup of Octoberfest beers and that ones description jumped out at me. It was a fine beer for a dark. Smooth, not bitter and very easy to drink. Cost me nearly $12 for 2 (16 oz) Worth it!

Excellent. If you liked it try Spaten and Hacker-Pschoor also if you ever have the chance. They are among the 6 official Oktoberfests allowed to be served at the real deal in Munich every year ( the other 3 are Lowenbrau, Hofbrau and Augustiner).

Rained all day. Wife out with her sister and mom shopping at some fancy candle store in western MA. I spent the day watching movies with the kids.

Later we went over to my MIL for dinner. She wanted to use the fireplace in her new condo the first time so my wife suggested I bring her some wood. Good thing I did, we get there and she and my SIL are hovering around 2 small splits smouldering over a duraflame fire starter and that thing was throwing off less heat than a candle. I broke out the good stuff I brought over (3 year ash from the shed) and got it burning well but it was a loosing battle against a poorly built condo fireplace - exterior masonry chimney, probably too short, and a big deep firebox with straight sides that might be oversize for the flue and certainly doesnt reflect much heat in the room. Oh and its not good draft conditions - 50 and raining out.

And get this, that wood she bought from home depot was labeled "Smokeless Joe's kiln dried" I can tell you it isnt smokeless and it sure as heck cant be kiln dried.

My MIL mentioned that when she opened the damper cold air came down the chimney but she didn't try to do anything like the newspaper trick to kick start the draft so it smoked up the place before I got there to get it going well... Ended up smelling smoke throughout the condo no matter how hot I got the fire going. My eyes where burning. Now I remember why so many people think wood burning is messy.

Also makes me appreciate the 200 year old fireplaces in my place with real rumford fireboxes and interior chimney that draft like a hoover and can bake you out of the room :)

Back home now but Ive got a headache. time for a drink!

Jeremy. Would your MIL's situation benefit from one of those fans for the chimney that helps it draft better?

Helped a co-worker of my wife's with his car today. He's a nice young guy, shy, but he doesn't have a great family situation. His dad never took time for him and he knows little about working on a car and doesn't make much so getting a garage to fix it isn't possible.

The car is a 1973 Impala in good shape as it only has 19000 miles but it had been sitting for quite some time so some items are in a need of replacing. My wife encouraged me to call him and see if I could help. We know he is cash strapped so told him I would pay for the parts as long as he did the work, with my help of course. He jumped at the chance and really dug right in. Last week we replaced the alternator belt and a fuel filter.

Today we tackled the heater. All last year he drove his car without a heater, and it was a nasty cold winter. The core had been bypassed since it was leaking.
We had to remove the dash and glove box to get access at to the heater box.

Although it took a long time, and I'm sore from the contortions I was doing to get access to everything, we both had a good time. He learned alot and got heat for the winter. While I enjoyed working on a car that was took me back in time. It was as if I was working on the same era of vehicles that I learned to maintain myself.

I forgot to count how many times he thanked me and my bride thinks I'm a hero for helping. Brownie points with my girl is always a good thing :)
