I'd actually be tempted if they sell a regular cab long box. Now, affording any new truck is another matter.

Corrosion and rust can be kept ahead of if coated from new, sadly most people who buy new trade them after 3-6 years so they don't worry about what will happen after that. Then, the rust gets into it and those who buy used are left to deal with it.

 

One and maybe the only thing Their cars do pretty well with is rust. But it's gotta be an oxymoron for vw to sell a "truck"

 

The plugs blowing out was early 00s. Till they redesigned the head to get more threads for the plug to grab. It was the early triton engines late 90s at earliest. But I know in 03 or 04 there was a head redesign. I think it was 04 or 05 was the desirable year. Then from about 05 on is when you have the spark plug seizing in the head problem that lead to snapped off plugs and the special ford plug removal tool which every tool maker now makes to get the famous broken plugs out. Many shops will not touch ford's from that vintage for a plug change if they have never been done cause your almost gurenteed to snap a plug. The same era mid 00s up though at least 2012 or better had the cam phaser issues I think and the same eras again had the timing chain issues where they would snap, it was a dual chain setup and cost over 1000 to replace it I know.

 

I read somewhere a while back that the plug issue on tnose fords was caused by the factory torque setting being wrong, and if you re-torqued them to a different number, you shouldn't have the issue? I can't recall where I saw that now though.

For all the trucks we've had, I don't think any of them died of drive train issues, except a ranger dad bought needing an engine and sold after, still in that state. The rest were all rust issues, mind you the Dodge Dakota had the frame rebuilt but got sent off after a ball joint failed soon after. Was a newer ball joint, either installed wrong or a total lemon. Ruined the front end, didn't have money to fix it.

 

Most of it was the metal differences, had to do also with the deep head and that long plug and the long life they quoted. For those that replaced them less than 100k or on time, best around 75k I heard usually there was no issues. It came leaving them in deferring PM would get you into that situation.

No, Ford made a huge mistake with the design of the heads. Then acted like nothing was wrong. For 60 years manufacturers have known about dissimilar metals aluminum heads and spark plugs. Every other manufacturer can use an alloy that won't instafuk the plugs.
I've personally left plugs in for 200k and they glided out.
That generation of truck also had the janky bearing built into the driveshaft that was not only prone to failure but cost an arm and a leg.

Imo The last decent Ford truck was the square body. Even then they had issues but we're simple to work on ableit underpowered.
Last ford I touched was a 96?f150 5.0 60k rusted out oil pan.
My dad had an f150 351 that rusted out with 100k on it. almost had to pay a kid to take it away....my dad was so tired of dealing with people he let the kid have it for $ 50. The c4 trans was still good so he got his money's worth.

I actually want to tow a 88' f250 IdI we have with 200k to the scrap yard with my 300k mile trailblazer. The type of people interested are not worth the small value of selling the thing. Easier and less time consuming to roll off the trailer and watch it get crushed.

 

My biggest problem was that they acted like there was no problem and made it for years that way!!

Again not standing up for ford, but they all try to act like nothings wrong. ...... lol. I guess no one really wants to admit they screwed up, even an individual that mis-measured a piece of lumber.

My 04 needed a whole new driveshaft to fix a bad u joint, but thankfully that prompted the PO to get one made up that fixed that problem. Other than the FPDM, that truck survived a lot longer than she should have without issue. Sent her off when a brake line failed because the rest of the truck was rusted apart, but I guarantee an 04 GM would have rusted out a lot sooner. Thankfully they fixed that horrendous quality of steel in 2007, I've only seen one gmt900 with a bad frame yet. I've heard of 800s breaking in half at 3 years old....

My buddy's 09 Chevy has well over 200K with hardly ever an issue, but a former coworker of dad's has a 2010 gmc that needed a ton of work at 10 months old. Luck of the draw.

I can think of 3 super old trucks in my community still being used as work trucks rather than show classics, and they're one each of the big 3. A 78 ford that was still plowing snow recently, a 67-72 gmc that can still haul quite a load of wood, and an early 80s half ton ram still hauling hay piled over the cab as well as other farm duties. On the other hand the manager of the garage we go to, gave up on a 4th Gen ram due to electrical gremlins and got a gmc. Has mentioned considering a Ford next time around haha.

 

These are more reliable than any truck.........lot better looking too.

 

By the way, I was referring to the spitting them out issue, not the breaking off issue. I still don't know how accurate the info is, but I've never had an issue with plugs in any vehicle, nor replaced them in any vehicle.

 

How old are you again? And you drive old vehicles and yet never replaced plugs?

And a used truck that you would buy, what age would it be, how much would one cost and how long do they last? Have you or any northerners ever considered buying a one way plane ticket to the south to buy a truck? I mean our lots are stI'll full right now with 04s that other than maybe very minor surface rus/discoloration are still solid.

 

Yup looking at it.. But always concerned about flood vehicles etc., not knowing laws down there..

 

To admit there was a problem at that time would have bankrupted them.

Their current transmission bushing fix(falling out of gear) is the same deal. Just reading today it seemingly affects their cars as well.
Their mustangs manual transmission has had major teething problems as well.
The national highway institute is pushing for federal charges, because of the very point of a known issue that keeps being manufactured with the "bushing" failure.

People take it personally though. Not to sound like a gangster but it's literally just business.

They had the crown Victoria that spewed gas into the passenger compartment if rear ended lighting it's passengers (police) on fire in the same era of the spark plugs fiasco. Another bread and butter vehicle.
Now their ecoboost are poisoning their police patrons with carbon dioxide and their fix hasn't fixed it.

The thing is is most of the issues don't change people's mind. In this case It's marketing that makes peoples opinion. hat Marketing uses cognitive dissonance that I mentioned earlier.
Ford convinced the public they didn't need bailouts when they did and received them.

They also market that the f series is the best selling for 50 years Another lie. They lump all their f series together. And compare them to disected segments.
The whole "military grade aluminum" is a joke too.
I don't hate ford, I think their 5.0 is cool as an idea but as a company they can't pull it off. It has a bunch of shortfalls.
Personally they keep disappointig me.
I wish they kept the 5.4 l, they just got it right then abandoned it.

It's like the whole made in China thing ( I love harbor freight) or ethanol gas is bad.
If Ford made an awesome truck I'd buy it.

There are dealers here that sell only southern trucks.
From what I've seen any truck from out of state is better than here. Vt ma nh pa they are all clean compared to ny.

What I've looked at is Texas trucks. Everything is flat and a good driving distance= easy miles.

Ditto. A flood vehicle is probably still better than 10 years of road salt.

 

A fair amount of trucks and cars that get purchased up north are from Texas and other points south. It’s sometimes hard to find a 4wd truck from warm weather places that aren’t used off road. As an example, my son just picked up a '67 Ford Mustang that was a Cali car. No frame or body rust. It had been restored once and Por-15 was used on the frame to help keep it rust free.
