Went to Blue Ridge Hearth in Christiansburg today with my wonderful bride... great store, excellent store personnel- not pushy at all. Had a great selection of stoves/inserts both wood and pellet burning.
Got what I feel was a great deal on some fixed 90° elbows $10.99 each ....2 for us & 2 for tinbiscuit...

tinbiscuit ’s elbows and his safety glasses he left over here the other day:

Can’t find their web site, maybe college professor yooperdave can locate it...he’s awesome at sniffing out ridiculously hidden internet info...

This is just one view of the showroom, behind this vantage point were more stoves, including gas log stoves/inserts and fire view walls(?) Don’t know what ya calls them things with a cutout in an otherwise flat wall, sealed glass w/ gas logs/glass beads inside....

They also had a nice store area selling primitive furnishings and the like.

yooperdave you should read this. Do you agree with what they say?

With more snow predicted for the region this weekend, the prolonged wintry conditions being experienced in the Upper Peninsula show no sure signs of relenting soon, a circumstance that has state wildlife biologists concerned about the stressful impact to white-tailed deer.

“A month ago, we were optimistic about the deer herd, with spring on the horizon and the winter we’d had to that point,” said Terry Minzey, Upper Peninsula regional wildlife supervisor for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “Now, I’m quite concerned with what we might end up with because of this protracted winter weather.”

Deer radio-collared in the western U.P. as part of an ongoing predator-prey study or a new deer migration study, have suffered a 13.5 percent mortality rate so far this winter, with 11 percent of adult female deer dying.

That mortality rate compares to 15 percent through the entire month of April in 2017.

“The big difference between this year and last year is that as of April 11 last winter, 95 percent of the deer had dispersed from their wintering complexes,” Minzey said. “This year, there have been none. They’re all still there because of the continuing winter conditions.”

An April 9 snow depth map showed more than 2 feet of snow in some northern parts of the region, nearly 2 feet of snow in other places, and several inches on the ground in areas traditionally green with grass by this time of year.

Some snow depth examples included 20 to 26 inches in Hulbert, 12 to 17 inches in Gwinn, 15 to 19 inches at Baraga, 16 to 17 inches at McLain State Park north of Hancock and 17 to 21 inches at Wakefield.

“In general, across the north and west, the deer are starting to look pretty rough and stressed,” said Brad Johnson, a DNR wildlife technician at Baraga. “The Keweenaw is almost up to 300 inches of snow (for the season) and we are listening to Tiger baseball on the truck radio 5 miles out on 2 feet of ice in Lake Superior in April.”

Took care of some odds and ends and errands today. Also cleaned kitchen and did laundry for the family. All they had to do is put it away.

About 18-20 months ago or so, I had reduced our TV channels to 2-13, the internet, and disconnected the land line phone through our cable service and just went with our cell phones. This reduced our cable bill by $58/month.

Today I went to same cable company and I politely asked them why my bill keeps going up and I’m not getting anything better from the service.

And told them I’m not going to pay more for less and I don’t want my bill this high. PERIOD.

I hadn’t been there in a while, but over the last six months or so my bill went up over $30/mo. :startled::picard:

Not getting more channels, not faster internet, etc.

A good man looked at my account and said we can get you into a package deal that will have the latest technology, you will have way more channels(over 100 more), twice the internet speed, and have your land line (cable)phone back. All for $22 less per month than your paying now. And we will credit the difference on your account for the last two months. :confused:o_O

Why don’t we go ahead and do that then.

Done. I hooked up all three TVs and programmed the new remotes when I got back this afternoon. Son and I are currently watching an Ancient Aliens marathon.:emb::whistle::rofl: :yes:

I think they are pretty close to dead on. The deer you see in those feeding pics were taken this afternoon and the pic doesn't do them justice to the amount of stress they are showing. I was out to that same place in late Feb early Mar and they seemed much better (normal?) at that time of year.

I do not know the other snowfall areas or depths as I haven't been up to the Keweenaw in quite some time (years....99 doesn't care for it) but it is easy enough to search and find out snowfall totals.

As far as the ground cover goes, again, they are about dead on accurate. It is only as of yesterday that some bare spots showed up in the yard-those being in the drainage ditch where there is some water moving and catches full radiant form the sun-so it is the first spot to melt. I saw my first robin on Mon and had to laugh because there is no bare ground for the poor bird!

You can't see it in the pics, but close to half of those deer (and almost every young one) had the "fuzzy face" which, I learned decades ago, is one of the later indications of severe stress/starvation/weakness. Also, the fat reserves were down as evidenced by the hip bone to rump angle. In a healthy deer with good reserves, that part of the deer will remain level...in a stressed deer, there is a noticeable downward angle from the hipbone to the rump.

One more thing, we both know that when a deer is starving, it is more willing to take more chances "risk versus reward" sort of thing. I realize other people must be feeding these deer, but these came up to within 3 arm-lengths of me as soon as I opened the trunk on the Corolla to get the bag opened! They were cautious, but also bold enough to begin feeding without me leaving the immediate area. In years past, old timers would hand feed them cedar boughs! I have seen pictures of this.

Usually by this time of year, the deer are breaking up their yards or already have done so. Very true this year, they seem to be yarded up yet.

Yeah, I gotta call them up about once per year and complain about escalating prices. Then they get them back down to my "normal" price until the next year.

Funny - I just got an email about my next bill being available (I automatically pay thru cc). Took a look and yep, it had just gone up $35 since last month. Guess my year is up and I will have to call again.

Good morning Firewood Hoarders. Caffeine going in here. Not good weather outside so today will be doing some carpentry work in the barn. See if I can get the ceiling/roof joists over the room called the office. Then the floor put down on top of those.

About to head home on our second leg of today's flights. Yes, the crap weather is still in Wisconsin. Tomorrow it is to snow. Whatever. Going from 80 degree days to 30's is going to be a shock. It's nice in DC. 79° now. I've got a feeling something of this crap weather will hit DC and similar areas out east soon.
