Well, the cabin was fine. That's always a big relief. No porkys and that's good too. Did have a ground digger ??? burrow too close to one of the pads. We filled it with rocks and drove them down in but prolly won't make much difference. Don't red squirrels and chipmunks burrow like that? Tiny little feets tracks.

And take a look at this next pic... notice anything?

Thankfully not a big deal. Looks like that area is settling a bit. I'll just add some shims under the posts. All of the perimeter posts are fine and have the old foundation stones under them... no doubt why they aren't moving.

It's a very rainy day today, our whole back yard is flooded again. We decided to fry up some walleye that my husband caught on Friday. They were so good, I think he should fish more :)
Hope you all had a great weekend too!

Code wouldn't let that pass down here for at least two reasons, the footings can not be all below the frost line as evidenced by the gaps between the top of the footing and the posts and the big one the structure isn't anchored to the ground (footings).

Yup. As far as not being anchored, the weight of the bazillion nails we drove in it ought to hold her down perty good...;)

Not really, you should see the metal I used and it was still a requirement to anchor to the footings. Something about lift and sideways movement. The ME course I took eons ago convinced me to pay attention to loads and fastenings.

Yeah, those ole codes whipped up by the insurance industry. Our cabin doesn't fit their template for structural risk coverage. Can't get it. As for the town's codes... unless we have indoor plumbing, there are none. Sanity still exists in some very small Maine towns (with few people). When I think about all of the 100 yr old barns and sheds still sitting on rocks, I gutta chuckle.

Incorrect on the lack of applicable codes, the state made a change several years ago and there are (with very few exceptions) now statewide minimum requirements (this was aimed at towns that weren't playing ball). You really need to pay attention to those idiots in Augusta.

Those old structures were also made with real wood and real nails etc... by people that knew to overbuild and why. Never know what you are getting these days.

Only the well made 'old' structures have survived the test of time. The rest have long since been torn down leaving us with a mistaken belief that things were better way back when.

Of course that statement doesn't hold true in Lewiston. There they have an affinity for crappy old buildings and preserve them by enrolling them in a historic preservation program known as section VIII. How many of them ever pass fire inspections is beyond me.

And Stinny -- Permits; Codes? Your cabin. your land your rules.
