Crazy pet meds.... had to re-up the dogs supply of heart worm pills - much cheaper online than the vet to the tune of $40/yr. Bigger dogs get the bigger doses. In my hunt for better buys I also found that you can now buy from Bayer directly through Amazon for Advantix; which should save me another $60/yr.

Anyone else got a thrifty way to save some moolah on these costly meds? Between heartworm & tick stuff I am about $330/yr for the 2.

When I had big dogs (62 - 95 pounds), and they got hookworm, my vet had me put them on a monthly dose of Ivomec 1% - it's a cattle medicine with an off-label usage in dogs for getting rid of (and keeping rid of) several types of worms. Didn't have to worry about heart worms any more. It's about $50 for 50 ml and it would last quite a while. Don't remember what the dosage was but used a specific syringe supplied by the vet to measure and squirt onto their food. 50 ml would last at least a year when we had 3 large dogs at the same time.

Word of caution - some breeds of dogs react horribly to it (shelties, collies and mixes of those). None of my mixes (HuskyX, GSDX, SamoyedX, LabX, GrayhoundX) had any trouble with it and they all lived to be 15-16 YO. Also, make sure to check with your vet on dosage if you decide to try this as dogs need a ridiculously low dose (which is why you need a special syringe to measure dosage) - otherwise one can risk overdosing their dog with too much.

I'll have to check Amazon for stuff.
I've been using Drs. Foster & Smith for quite a while.
I quit using the topical AdvantixII early this year, and went to the Seresto collars. Cheaper and much easier. And, they seem to work.

Those are really toxic: There is a warning to avoid human contact. Not to let the dog sleep with you. Just as toxic to them as it is to you, but pets don't have the same legal protection with warnings. I read the reviews. seems to work about as well as the topical stuff. There were reports of dogs becoming ill, and some with lesions where the skin contacted the collar. Of course fleas and ticks are horrid also. We don't have flea issues, but the ticks are something else all together. If I could, I would let guinea hens run around. They do a number on the tick population. My wife is still taking antibiotics for a tick bite and infection. She doesn't even walk out on the grass! Dogs are protected with AdvanticII, cats don't go out at all. We have very few ticks while we had the drought, but when the rain started, the ticks came back. A few more hard frost and the tick issue will be mute.

I hadn't heard that about the collars Larry.
I'll check into it before another purchase. Our dogs haven't had an issue with them.......luckily.

No dogs in the bed or on the furniture, but my son loves laying all over them including in THEIR beds. The reviews on the collars were ok, between these 2 and my last dog Advantix has worked awesome. A tick here or there but never fleas, and we live in a heavily wooded area prevalent with deer ticks. I might stick to what works, although I do appreciate the alternative suggestion.

As do I. We also have little ones all over the dogs so we must use extreme precaution which includes inspection of the dogs and kids. Would be nice to find some sort of protection to use outside that is selective, not harmful to birds or bees.

    You're doing better than me....
mine are closer $400/6months for the three chuckleheads. I don't have the option of getting off the flea topical in the winter months as they are still active here.
I flirted with going online route but you needed the prescriptions from the vet - and then you're just kind of shipping money out of the local economy and my Vet is a good local guy

No need for a script for flea and tick stuff.
My wife gets all other stuff through the Amish feed store or TSC and gives the dogs their shots......except rabies.
Here, you can do that too, but try to get someone to believe you did that if your dog bites someone...........good luck.

A little work to do this am, then off to deer camp for some early rut hunting with the bow. This is the last weekend of bow before the orange army deploys and 60k deer (usual opening weekend harvest for IN) are no longer available for me to ventilate.
