Hey what's wrong with pink? Pink is a lovely color, works well on insulation.

    >>> Should I turn secure boot off, wipe Windows 8 off the box and do a native 64 bit Linux install on this bad boy or do I wipe my two VirtualBox Linux machines, install a large 64bit VirtualBox Linux machine, update Windows to 8.1 and use Windows as my boot system?

In helping me make this decision you should understand that I'm a bit bender and layering operating systems on top of other operating systems is my version of playing games.

BTW, this new box has the horses, it is 30+ times faster than my old unit. Just a might larger too.

I don't have a clue, but as an ex-(Digital UNIX) product manager, I'm looking forward to the answer.

I might have a couple of Digital emulators and operating systems on my USB catch all hard drive, if not, I know where to get them.

I know I have the stuff to run several IBM heavy iron operating systems.

I have the day off for working the holiday on Monday. Stove is running, and I am woodworking in the 50 degree basement.

I am going to pick up a bunch of cut up 100 year old 2 x cutoffs from a neighbor who is gutting a house. They have quite a pile that someone did not pick up and they want it out of the way. I burned a few pieces last night and it is pretty primo. It burned hot, but coaled heavily until I opened the air up and burned it down. Kind of backwards way to run the stove for me but free wood is good in my book. The clean pieces without nails will be for the mud oven, the stuff with the nails will be stove chow. I am hoping to get some clear 2 x 8's or 2 x 10's for repurposed wood projects.

I ran Red Hat, Fedora and Ubuntu for a long time I am in love with Ubuntu still. I need to find an old crate and bring it back to life again.

I'm looking forward to getting this box setup the way I want it to be. I turned secure boot off earlier and ran the memory and firmware diagnostics and the machine passed both so I can backup the two directories I want to transfer from the test instance of Linux I was running in Virtual Box and do a full 64 bit native install tomorrow.

Just have to decide on the partitioning of the hard drive.

I try to go slow so I don't miss things that can lead to problems. I hates computer related problems.

Oldhippie, by any chance do you know a Charles Kimball?

That name rings a bell! Is he a developer? I was big into early development and testing on Ubuntu when it first started. I was helping with sound cards for a while there. Man Virtual Box ugh I hate that.... Have you ever done a true dual boot? It's fantastic I tells ya.

I've run with several VM's, Multiple Boot, and I've even run it from a Windows file.

I've played with several distributions over the years.

The name was for Oldhippie, he was a former Digital employee.

Well I've got to do my directory copies and see what the machine thinks it has for partition on the hard drive. I may keep the Windows and install into another partition as there is no need to multiboot as the firmware can handle that.

I ran the firmware and memory tests last evening, it takes awhile to do a memory test on a lot of memory.

It took 2 days on the old windows laptop I had.... Seriously that was only 4 gig ram and 250 GB HD. I don't have the knowledge a lot of you do but it's still fun for me to tinker with. There was a time when I was all command line but I don't remember much of that anymore. I forgot I used to love Mandrake as well. Did you ever toy with Mandrake? ( not Mandriva although RPMs where cool.

Spent about 90 minutes digging out from last nights snow. I had a drift that ran from the front of the pole barn door around the attached garage all the way across my front deck. It was about 3 feet high in spots in front of the garage and on the front deck. Good thing I don't need to get into the main door of the pole barn anytime soon.

My wood stacks are under a drift somewhere on the west side of the pole barn. I'm glad I loaded up the attached garage Thursday night.

    Spring can come anytime.

Took my daughter to her riding lesson this morning. I sat there for half an hour with a horse blanket wrapped around me to keep warm. Of all the things that I never imagined that I would ever, ever do 10 years ago. They have an unheated indoor arena, but they can't water the dust down because their pipes will freeze. The dust was so thick you could chew the air. But is is a lot of fun watching my daughter ride so I have to put up with it.

Yes I installed and used Mandrake long time ago. The current here is openSuse 13.1. I just went through my collection of CDs and have 5 that go with old hardware I no longer have. Earlier today I sorted out stuff in my bin of cables etc... Got so many wall warts I'll have to thin that heard as well.

I was looking for cables and boy did I find a few.

Today was play with stove, TV, new computer, watch a movie, and have a nap day. I got some crap removed and shrunk the Windows partitions on the new machine, I've got a 64Bit openSuse 134.1 installed but can't currently boot it which considering the partition layout doesn't really surprise me. Shortly it will be multi boot. I will need to do some reading. At least I can boot Windows 8.whatever with the secure boot shut off.

Had a great day today, plowed snow for three hours, my drive and a bunch of my neighbors. Then played with my new chainsaw and took my daughter sledding and 4 wheeler tubing with some friends at their farm. Man that wind is nasty out there though +25 mph with driving/blowing snow.

I never given opensuse a shot hmmm. A tinker I shall go. :) I will say it was a pita to dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu! I had to use a clean install drive and install Windows 7 then Ubuntu 12.04 ISO via USB using the NTFS partition tool. What a pita it took 4 hours. But was worth it in the end.

I only had Linux on the old machine, sometimes several versions.

Windows 8 drags in secure boot which can make things interesting, the last Windows/Linux multiboot setup was Windows 98 and Suse.

The old system never saw a single instance of Windows on it, it came with Suse pre-installed. That machine was a white box system put together by Pollywell Systems.

Well, I introduced the boss to Amazon Prime instant streaming this evening. She is watching Nova.
