Tear down is complete. The clutch is mint. Looks like other than the usual cleanup of everything, all I’ll have to buy is the gasket/seal kit, crank bearings, a piston and ring, a new throttle safety mechanism, a fuel line and a carb kit. I believe the AV mounts were changed out recently and are in excellent shape, so I’ll use them for now.
Project oe346 is closer. I need to wire wheel the muffin and bracket for fresh paint. Then solve the rim issue. The extra thickness on the 3/8th is making the clutch touch the drum when tight. I don’t want .325. 325 rim: 3/8
Got any friends with a machine shop out there? If not you can send it to me and I'll face it off in the lathe.
Appreciate that. I don't know anyone that could do it. I'm still deciding on which way to go. That's an aftermarket drum, which I'm not to crazy about.
Maybe it would make more sense to machine the aftermarket drum so that you could use standard 3/8 rim sprockets? I’m not sure if there’s enough extra metal on the back of that drum though.
Some great info here. I have 3 of the 266 saws. 2 runners and 1 thats locked up. The non runner is in almost perfect cosmetic cond.
This junk is whats on my bench... https://photos.app.goo.gl/AURvos9gaRcabuAU7 The vid above explains it if the pictures don't. lol
Lost a transfer cover didn’t it. New style ones don’t have them just like husky tried the epoxy on covers and it failed for both companies .
So my nephew says the guy wants a quote on a new parts plus labor. It also has a cracked muffler because it was left loose to rattle around for God knows how long. Cracked around one of the bolt holes. I told him he'd be far better off with an Echo CS590 Timber Wolf or a CS620P. He can probably buy the 590 for what repairs will cost. To be honest, I hate working on these and really don't want to tear another one down if I can help it.
reed induction air leak... novel concept... I hate working on some saws too, but lots of folks around here can't afford much for a chainsaw and I try to fix their saws for as low a price as I can and justify it as trying to pay it forward...
A different nephew gave me this the other day. He thought I'd like it for my collection. I'll polish it up and hang it from the ceiling.
I was surprised the owner didn't tell him about the nasty metallic clanking when pulling it over. He just told my nephew it won't start and the muffler is loose. I thought the bottom rod bearing fell out lol.
I agree. I've been very happy with my MS250. Any saw I work on for a friend or friend of a friend, if I have to take the cylinder off, it gets at least a tweak to the exhaust port and at least a look at the lowers to see if there are any flow improvements that can be made.
Definitely not worth the effort to fix and I won’t mess with one even unless it’s the new style with no covers. Was a poor design to try the glue on covers by Stihl and husky both with same results.
