Guess I’m not that lucky The plating is flaked right off at the top of the cylinder in a couple spots. Time to search for either a used OEM or try my odds with a Hyway or comparable.
Stihl 028, 028Av, Wood Boss, 44mm Used Cylinder and Piston with New Ri I've purchased things from here a few times. Haven't had any issues yet.
Thanks, looks like a decent outfit Since I already had a piston/rings/gasket set/couple other parts on order from Sawzilla I ended up checking on eBay for just a factory cylinder. Found a decent OEM one for $30 that looks great inside the bore. I’ll definitely keep that SawAgain place in mind for the future though.
Excellent. I look forward to your progress. We need more saw builds here. I'm kicking around doing one to see if it sparks interest in others.
Full disclosure ~ this is the first time I’m ever doing the top end on a chainsaw I’ve done probably a dozen on various dirt bikes and ATVs over the years but somehow haven’t ripped apart a saw yet. TBH just watching what you and others on here have been tinkering on made me miss the feeling of bringing back a motor from the dead. So this free 028 fell into my lap and I’m just going to run with it
Yep. Few times for vintage saw parts. I'll buy again if needed. Same with Randy's small engine parts and Leon's chainsaw parts and repair.
I bought something from them, been awhile, don’t remember what it was. Maybe some parts for a 288, ( which I might have got from you) Had no issues with dealing with them, I might have gotten a bar also in another purchase
This muffler is gazing back at me with an OMG WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?!?! face All sandblasted and ready for paint.
I was definitely floating the idea. More long term though I was hoping to make a new muffler entirely, and use this just to get the saw going.
I've seen a lot of muffler mods, some seem like they have been brazed, others are welded. Would Silver Solder work? Seems like it would be an easier material to work with.
I actually came across an Ironhorse video recently on YouTube and thought man, if this guy can butcher together a homemade muffler using the junk he uses, I should be able to make one at least as good as anything he can make.
I concur. Lol I prefer the look of the original square mufflers myself. Or a tuned expansion chamber.
According to Google, silver solder melts at 1145F and chainsaw exhaust gas is around 900F, so that seems to be cutting it close to me.
If you ever get your saw muffler to 900 while running, you have problems. The actual muffler itself. Brazing rod melts above 840°.
