Rebuilt a 394 today I used a 395 hyway popup piston kit I used a red97 deflector and was tuning it in wood when the coil died I sold my last 394 last month so I had to order a coil.
Have you had good luck with aftermarket coils? So far the only one I've purchased has worked flawlessly. There was no alternative to revive my freshly XS ported saw. Aftermarket it was.
Replaced the fuel line and rebuilt the carb on this 330t. Man, changing that line that attaches to the carb through the handle is a Pita!
I tried a cheap chinese coil on mine when I was diagnosing a hot start issue. Took a lot of performance out of the saw and it only lasted a couple months. When I put an OEM one back in it felt like someone lightly ported it. I didn't realize just how bad it was until that moment. It was at that point that I vowed off cheap crap on my saws.
About the china stuff In the 7 years since I bought 7 of those china 365/372 clones Nobody I'd talked too had tried them and I had a bunch of bars and parts laying around. Now keep in mind I went through them some with oem cylinders some with hyway popup kits some with 268 or 272 pistons in china cylinders most of them I ran a few years and gave out to my family There's no value in used china saws. Some of them are still their main firewood or storm cleanup saws In that time 1 coil has failed a couple of stop switches and oddly most of the chainbrake springs were too light. After a few impulse and fuel lines failed I replaced with echo line. I rebuilt the oem 372 on the left this morning and ran it in cutting trees Impressed with the plated duke's piston As far as power they were so close i couldn't say especially running a 20" on one and a 24" on the other. maybe when the rings seat the oem will pull ahead. Since I got that little tool set I've rebuilt a 288,372,394,272 and working on a 345 The only thing lacking was a 3/16 t handle for the 2 series a hemostat for lines and needle nose pliers for circlips.
I've never tried a china coil on the 394/395s But have used many on 346/350/365/371/372s they didn't seem to have any problem's keeping up with oem coils I have many with oem coils as well.
The coil I bought was for my Dolmar built Makita DCS 401. They had problematic OEM coils and the upgraded coils are no longer available and used up replacing the originals. I found one coil that was supposed to be for it and it does fit perfectly and it runs stronger than with the problematic factory coil. It almost feels more advanced as it seems to kick a bit when starting now. Not bad but enough to notice. So far it has been good to go.
Many years ago I was given a new 5100 Because the coils back then were Around 200.00 and there was a variety of coils for that series It probably just had one tank on it and the guy was mad it quit and the repair costs was in the hundreds. Dolmar was terrible about warranty work.
I was given this 288 yesterday Actually a low hour saw has fire good bottom end and the cylinder is pristine It's strange it was stripped down I think I have everything to rebuild it.
I paid $70 for a Partsrun brand coil. I do have a nice Dolmar 100, that I ported, with the same style OEM coil that I've thought about swapping to the XS saw as they supposedly didn't have issues. Changing coils on a Dolmar isn't as simple affair as other saws. The wires are buried under the flywheel and the pullstart is behind the flywheel.
I finished the 395 today I put a coil in it It's a strong saw I dug out my brother's 288 lite he gave me 20 year's ago when he retired from logging I did some work to it it's a very strong 288 but not as strong as a 394/395
Started on a 345 put a carb kit and primer bulb in fuel lines tomorrow Still has a great bore and compression But I need to swap out the spring clip on the intake I think a 372 or 390 clip will fit these The spring clips are known to leak.
This is the future 25:1 peanut oil mix test unit to be ran at Denny's GTG. I know errbody is jelly but you can't have it.
