Just tore into this lil' basket case in hopes of making something special, she's rough around the edges but the guts are near perfect and very hard to find nowadays.....what is she?
Yes sir. And the internals are near-mint. I've got some homegrown plans for this one (Hawg-modded), we built one for blacksmith out of a slant fin red-lever 10mm saw I sold him that turned into quite the little monster. So much so that I tried to talk him into selling it back to me, to no avail....lol So I had to look and find one to build for myself (thanks to david young and a few other great guys), now to assess exactly what parts I still need to get it back to snuff. She's not gonna be a shelf queen, this will be a user, but still "present" well. I've got a real nice OEM tank/handle assy, brake flag, clutch cover, flywheel, plastics and wrap, gotta get the other secret ingredients next. I'll post up some build pics and descriptions when I get everything together to build it.
It was on the bench I promise!!! Finished putting this old Craftsman/Poulan 3400 together today. It was in major need of some muffler work. I can’t believe these saws even run the way the muffler is built. There’s a couple tiny holes in the back of the can that blow back to a plate and then around the top of the can through a slit. Not to mention the internal baffle and screen, but we took care of that.
Might end up having to put a coil in it, I fixed a sky diver 562 once and the coil made it a month or so before it quit. Either that one didn’t like the shock or it was a coincidence.
passed the pressure and vac tests fixed all the bad parts with good used ones minus a new drum bearing. Also changed the brake band out because it was discolored from the heat. Opened up the factory cover plus added a 193t deflector to the can & opened the baffles up.
got a real nice few years old 372xp xt, lost a screw and punched a hole in the case. Thought about welding it so I talked to Shaun carr and he told me it would warp and I was kinda afraid it would too. So on the fence what to do, weld it and try to skim cut the case cylinder surface flat, buy new oem case half “most likely option” or try a set of aftermarket cases with good oem bearings. I haven’t decided if I’m keeping or flipping it but I have a hard time selling something with aftermarket parts even if it’s just cases.
Lehman, I’d still weld it if you have access to a milling machine. Bolt a junk jug on it, preheat it and weld it. Then put it in the oven on 350 and cool it slowly. If it warps at all it will be minimal, and then just deck it like MattyO does.
I’ll maybe give it a go and if it doesn’t work out well I can buy a case half things a real nice saw otherwise and low hours I’d bet. The welding rod will cost almost as much as a case half I bet, used to find it on eBay and none listed now.
Bought this one too but haven’t looked close enough to see what’s wrong but it will be parts if nothing else
Shawn did a nice video on YouTube repairing 2 different case halves, AZ92A is the rods he uses. I have a junk set (ethanol or water damage) 266 cases I want to practice on.
Well it’s either weld it or wait for a case set to show up because it’s 400$ for a new set of cases sold only as a set

I've run many gallons of fuel through this coarse thread 1986 266 since stumpshot ported it in 2018 Still has the original bearings and seals. I let this guy wearing the steel toed crocs run it and he was the end for the rubber av mounts he got stuck several times and tried to rip it out.
The Stumpmaster has my 372 in his hands as we speak! Can’t wait to see what kind of magic he can work on it!
