Most of the 020av’s I’ve had were set up with 1/4 pitch and it works well. They also made a super version of that saw. You have a rear or top handle?
My latest resurrection was over a year in the making. Found this beat-up carcass of what was once a legendary Stihl 084AV and after over a year of searching literally all over the world, she's one custom muffler away from being completed! This is what I started with. She was beaten and abused, but the case, crankshaft, piston and cylinder were in great shape internally. Tear-down revealed many missing and broken components. Here's the problematic 084 oiler drive gear and tang. It's not supposed to be in pieces like that with chunks missing our of the spur gear! I ended up installing an MS880 spur gear and sprocket because the 084 spur gear and associated parts are NLA and nearly impossible to find. These 084a have a manual oiler as well as rhe auto oiler (which is a great feature for long bars), but the manual oiler plunger created an anemic condition in these 084's where it wouldn't let the automatic oiler function at its peak. After some help from a guru over on OPE, I modded the plunger by taking .010 off the plunger tangs. That'll fix the problem and give the oiler full capacity. More disassembly and carefully inspecting what makes this thing tick. Carburetor comparison....on the left is a Stihl 034AV carb. On the right, the 084AV carb. That thing is huge! It takes up half my hand! The 084AV has a pretty cool crankshaft also. I inspected and hydrosonically cleaned all the parts to this saw. Reassembly time. Took the base of rhe cylinder down to give me around .025 clearance at TDC. She should have tons of compression when done. Also replaced crank seals, oil pump seal, case gasket, new Caber rings and honed the cylinder to reseat the new rings. I didnt touch the ports yet, wanna see how it runs first.... After finding a near-perfect fuel tank/handle in England, and lots of other hard-to-find parts from definitive dave, I about have her finished up. If you look closely, you can see a crack in the air filter cover. I plastic welded the crack back together with a soldering iron (as these parts, in decent condition, are VERY hard to come by). Close-up of the repaired cover. Can hardly see the crack. Now I gotta build the muffler, possibly this weekend.. I've already made the patterns, just gotta get in the backyard shop (where my plasma cutter and welders are) to build it. Still waiting on a few other odds and ends, I'll post pics and a video when she's up and running. Wish me luck! I've wanted a nice example of this saw since I started out years ago!
Im in the process of porting three different cylinders, with different recipes, for a Remington Mighty Mite saw to see the differences first hand. Some of the porting is roughed in.
Another trick on your plastic weld is to melt metal screen into the plastic on the back side to strengthen it. You can also use string trimmer line or zip ties as plastic welding "rod" to fill the crack. Saw is looking great by the way.
Dissassembled newly acquired 357XP ($100). Saw runs. Piston is toast. Cylinder will clean up. Walbro rebuild kit. New seals. Major cleaning. Should be like new. Also have a 455 and a 154SE.
The 084 crank is a thing of beauty. Nice work and amazing transformation! Welcome to the 084AV owners club.
I guess I didn’t realize the 084’s had an oil pump drive like the 028/038 ect. And I’ve always wanted one but just so hard to get parts for one that it would need to be a very limited used play saw. Nicest one I’ve ever seen was the owner of the local shop that quits saw. He bought it new built his log house with it and an Alaskan mill then probably 10 years before he closed he rebuilt it completely with nos parts. That was a real nice saw.
Nice job Scott! Quite the transformation. That tank replacement made a hug difference. Did you do a muff mod yet?
Coolest connecting rod in the entire chainsaw world! And you wanna hear something crazy? Whilst searching for all these HTF parts, I bought another COMPLETE 084AV in really decent shape for crazy cheap. It runs but won't tune so I'm thinking it's the crank seals (previous owner already kitted the carb). I'll dive into that someday down the road.
Nice! I know where a like new one is, but the guy knows what he’s got. Last time I asked the price was 4,000.
Yes I couldn't believe how nice that tank I found was. It wouldn't show up on my ebay search, but when I searched ebay.eu it came up. It was around 95£ and 24£ shipping (which works out to something like 145 bucks IIRC), I was stoked to get that. There's alot of nice 084 parts available over in Europe and Australia. The shipping cost (and usually long wait for shipping) is what sucks.
