Excellent Softwood!!!!.... prob as close as you can get to a good Douglas Fir as far as blazing heat. Not exaggerating here. fair amount of ash but light and no where near most hardwoods......just about zilch for fines in the bag. clean my outside exhaust once a year and it's mainly light powdery ash.. been burning them exclusive for past few years .. under 300.00 at my dealers spring buy sale.. as far as maybe paying $$ more for good pellets, my take is, it's a product you will use every day all winter as opposed to say, paying a lump sum for a Sunday football game that is over in 4 hours or, 100.00 bucks at a fancy restaurant and gone few hours later. think you get more bang for your buck with pellets. just my way of justifying the xtra cost which works for me so it's all that matters.
Amen this year is first year since I started burning in 05 that I paid over 240 a ton (247 at Lowe's )
Bingo ! In early 2003, I paid 135 a ton. Even when #2 oil hit 4.00+, pellets were mid 250 area. I know we have pellet dealers here talking shortage, shipping, etc. But with oil reasonable, natural gas real cheap, pellets just dont have the appeal of saving any money for some of us.
If its only about saving money then yes, i agree. For me its about steady 24/7 heat as opposed to on/Off/on with hot water baseboards. Specially with a poorly insulated 1920,s house. Used to use a crapload of oil.
While I do like the " green renewable " aspect, I started pellets for #1 cost, #2 keeping my heating $$ here in the USA. Natural gas 8s winning both aspects for now. If I had a real chimney, I'd have a wood stove. So many dead trees around here, there is free wood EVERYWHERE.
The lowest I could ever get pellets around here is at big box stores. 259 a ton with a discount for buying multiple tons. But its usually ashy hardwoods. Not a big fan of them so i end up paying a bit more for decent softwoods.
Trying to burn up some of my older stuff , so right now I'm burning 50/50 mix of Ironstones and Kingdom softwoods
Well... broke down and decided to light the stove.. I 'usually' wait a little longer.. but.. it's pretty nippy.. I said what the heck.. But the smell of a bag of Matra, when you open them.. hmmmm.... Dan
Thought I'd give an update on the Wood + Sons pellets. I cleansed the stove and have now burned almost 4 bags and am very impressed with these pellets. Very, very little ash, clean glass and virtually no dust in the bags. Like they say, smoke'em if you got'em
We have a couple cold nights coming this week, predicted to be in the low to mid teens out. Will plan to run Wood & Sons those nights and see how they do.
