I was 8 years old and it was spring 1954, dad had bought a new Case VAC which was a exp protype for thr 300 that came out later on. Any way dad was plowing a field for corn with it and a 2 bottom 3 point plow. Once dad got the field opened he put me in the seat and told me to keep the front wheel (wide front) in the furrow
nraise the plow where he had and go down the other furrow back putting The plow down where he had.
After an hour and doing fine dad left me and got his 1948 Massey 44 six and 3 bottom trailer plow and joined me in the field.

I used that Case till 1959 when dad had a auction sale and sold all the cattle and farm equipment. Her kept the farm and rented it out, we moved to a small acrage place while dad worked in the city factory, He bought a Allis B but didn't keep it long, said it was a holy tractor and it refused to start for him on a Sunday. He got a WC allis to replace it.
1961 we moved back to ther farm with the WC and a Massey Harris 44/ 4. then a second 44 six.
that was the tractors till the Massey dealer retired and sold to a guy who liked to cuss and mom refused to go buy parts there. So A NF Allis WD replaced the 44/4 well it tried to, and WD45 tried to replace 44 /6. but failed as they were really only a 2 bottom plow tractor on our heavy soil.
    Later dad got a 2000 2 cylinder Ford, a 9 N and a 8 N with a loader, I got a 5000 ford gas I still have along with a D17 Allis and 22 Massey Harris tractorsd from the Pony to a 555 diesel.
    And the new Bota.

Even though my mother grew up on a farm, I wasn't old enough to drive any tractors so our Mahindra 4540 is my/our first tractor that I actually drove.

My wife and I had a Case VAI which I understand was an industrial version of a VAC. We mostly used it with a 3 pt rotary cutter to mow a huge yard. It had an after market 3 pt hitch. Tell me if I am correct to assume a 44/6 is a 6 cylinder vs a 44/4 being a 4 cylinder?

I couldn’t tell you the exact model, but it was an old three wheel Avery tractor.

I was 11 or so years old cutting wood with my dad. Well, he was cutting and I was throwing the wood in the trailer, and we’d use the tractor to tow the trailer closer to the road. He drove it up there, gave me a 30 second lesson on how to drive it and said ‘drive it back down when the trailer is empty’.

I made back it in one piece, scared chitless, but after the first trip it turned out to be one of the better parts of the job.

Can’t beat that heavy breathing sound from those 466’s. The pumps were generous with the fuel too leading to that rock star startup where it would rev up, sputtering and belching a little black smoke and then settling into an undeniably salacious cold lope. Same thing, hauling wagon trains to be unloaded with the 4440, which had the Quad-Range (the 4450 was a 15spd PowerShift with MFWD, not quite as nice on the road!) and each of those shifts rewarded you with some heavy breathing from the turbo. Start it off in D1, tap it over to D2, turn right off the dirt road, advance throttle, clutch it to D3, shove the throttle all the way forward to the stops and knock it into D4.

I’ma go take a cold shower now. :emb::rofl:

We had/have a 4230. It had to go into the shop during planting planting when I was in high school. The dealer had a used 4440 he loaned us. I LOVED that thing!

It's just the aneroid system doing it's thing. When it's not working right their a bear to start when it's cold.

I drove an old Ford tractor when I was a kid, when the naybuhs used to mow the fields at the fahm. I remember being terrified that I'd wheelie it right over if I slipped with the clutch... :hair:

Yes I have about 25 farm tractors, 22 are Massey Harris. One is a 1961 Allis D 17, another is a 1965 Ford 5000 gasand the new Kubota.

I have a old wheel horse garden tractor, a early Sears SS12, a Sperry Rand New Holland, and Ariens H 16, A simplicity 1964 Land lord, A Simplicity 7112 and a Simplicity 6517.

Also a walk behind Mongromy Wards 2 wheel tractor with a 3HP brigs and Straton engine from the 1950's

My favorite tractor is a 1938 Massey Harris 101, Has a Chrysler 6 cylinder indrustral engine, they used the same engine in Chrysler cars and trucks with out a govener of course.

Another favorite is a 1947 Massey Harris 44- 6 the 2nd one down the assembly line. It has a 6 cylinder F226 CID continental engine.

I think my first piece of equipment was a Cat D3 dozer, young enough that children services would be interested lol.
First tractor was an international 464… and I hope to buy/own it some day.

Not sure the true first time I drove a tractor. But as a kid I had the croup frequently the best cure was my papaw would take me out on the tractor!

I remember at 4-6 years old riding along while he raked and baled hay mostly MF but also Ford 8N and 9N's The MF265 he used to push over trees!!! man did that ever scare me when the front tires are 5' off the ground and he says "you wanna drive"!
