metalcuttr Can you explain that bit about moles? I have lots of them in my yard now. They moved in after we got some rain earlier this fall and the ground softened up. I never heard any connection between moles and winter.

Always great to meetup with a couple hoarders! Had a great time drinking cider and bull-chitting with Canadian border VT and NH mountain man today!

Yes.... 3000+ has a bunch of snow, so we'll be snow covered in 2 weeks at my elevation. Lots to do before then!

Sorry, Erik B , that part was meant to be tongue in cheek. It kinda sounds like so many of the Old Folks weather lore. "I knows it's goin to be a hard winter this year 'cause the berries done come in harder than usual and the fur's all bunched up on the squirrels backs and Uncle Charley saw a whole herd o' possums headin south to scape the coming cold. Also the moles all been movin close to the house chimbley so's to stay warm come the snow flies! Yup.... goin to be a bad one!!

Just as Farmchuck stated, I'll let you know in April what kind of winter we'll have.

Just too many decades of listening to "experts" warn us of impending doom in the form of cold temps, deep snow, heavy rains, high winds, droughts, intense heat, ..................... and on and on and on about any upcoming season.....

Crap, they can't even get the 7-day forecast close or even tomorrow's forecast accurate! My phone should be called "inaccurate weather"

Well as the farmer’s almanac would read.....Expecting cold temperatures January 1-12. Some snow near the later half. Windy. Cold 13-25. Snow showers 20-25. Windy. 25-30 sheep will come into heat. 15-30 is a good time to castrate goats. Milk production will be down for the month.

I'm with Farmchuck, but I'll wait until May because we have had some pretty serious snowstorms in April.

Remember, the weather service is a non-Prophet organization!

    An Oldie....

Fall was upon a remote reservation when the Indian tribe asked their new Chief what the coming winter was going to be like. The modern day Chief had never been taught the secrets of the ancients. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.

Better safe than sorry, he said to himself and told his tribe that the winter was indeed expected to be cold and that the members of the village should stock up on firewood to be prepared.

After several days, our modern Chief got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?"

"It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the meteorologist at the weather service responded.

So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again. "Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?"

"Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "It's going to be a very cold winter."

The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later the Chief called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"

"Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever."

"How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked.

The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy."

While grouse hunting three days ago we found a skiff of snow in our hunting area with lows in the teens. We got 3-4" yesterday.

Someone asked me when winter starts, and I say "any time after the leaves are down."
