I have an old highway electronic sign board trailer that is going to be the foundation of my new splitter. Splitting will take place at the rear of the trailer. Shoeing horses since 1977 has not been user friendly to my back so it will be set up so I can work in the standing position, not a bent position. Still undecided if it will be a vertical or horizontal position splitter. It will have a log lift as well as a winch and boom. It will be larger than normal but I don't go into a woods as my woodline is 50' wide the length of our property. So snaking large limbs or rounds will be more of its function. Will put leveling legs on each corner. The front half of the splitter will have the engine and hydraulic tank as well as a small generator on it. I find I am splitting more in the summer so a pipe for an umbrella like on a patio table as well as a fan, hence the need for the generator. Also an area to carry in its intended place fuel and oil for the saws, places for saws, cant hook, hookaroon, log lifters and a cooler as I have a dehydration problem also so need plenty of powerade. Above the gen and splitter engines will be a flat work area with a cheap vise for the occasional work on a tool. A couple of places for water tight plastic tool boxes for the required tools. As I age, I realize this is a marathon, not a sprint so I plan on this being my last splitter build/last splitter needed so it is going to be what I haven't had but thought of while splitting. If I go with vertical split, I will need a small elevator, if I go with horizontal split, will let the ram push the pieces down a chute. So still undecided on that issue.

For argument's sake, I'm never going to split more than 2-3 cord a year, and I can split big rounds by hand if I need to for lifting purposes. Do you think electric is the way to go if the budget is less than $1300 or so for a splitter? I had always thought that hydraulic was the better choice but you are making me re-think.

Designing mine as I type. Will go on the skid steer. Will split a whole log up to 24” in diameter in 1 lick. Tossing the idea around to run a conveyor forward with fluid from the reverse stroke.

This is a interesting thread because I'm going to be building yet another splitter. IMG_20180827_181717208.jpg This is my last one. IMG_20171008_194859306.jpg
I bought 6 of these, 6 1/2" bore 56" stroke and a 3 1/2" rod. I also have a 115 hp White Hercules 6 cylinder power unit with only 30sum hours. Looking to try the European way, split and stack long lengths cordwood saw as needed.

This is an unusual one for me.

I really like the design of this table and wedge, log lift needs a hydraulic cylinder for me, don't want to tie up my winch with the log lift.

I am impressed with the log lift on this splitter!! Watch at the very beginning.

I’m happy with the cheapy I have, but if money were no object, I would love to have a whole log processor to get through the large piles of logs left on my woodlot.

The deere green one is sorta like the one I can't find on YouTube, except that it's an all in one instead of a trailer.

JWinIndiana I'll need to scour the youtube for the one I'm talking about, as it sounds like 99% of what you want if you go vertical work table type.

Tempest makes some like that too. Those splitters are pretty big. It would be tough to judge the split size too.

On the vertical table style splitter the log lift can be operated by the action of the splitter ram with a simple cable and pulley.

That would work fine with a fast-to-latch system to hold the log lift in the up position. Great idea!
