I have a red metal maul as well. I got it in the same lot as my Sotz. Both had pretty badly bent handles. I straightened them out in this video.

I agree the Sotz, despite being heavier, feels more natural in the hand. I think part of the reason is that the handles on the Sotz mauls are pinched for about a foot. So its oval instead of round. Slips and slides less in the hand and doesn't turn sideways as easy when you strike a blow.

To each his own! I use a x27 and a 8lb splitting maul for the regular straight wood and the gnarly in put in a pile for the log splitter. I cant get any better excerize than splitting wood by hand.

I agree100% about the pinched handle keeping the tool centered. I also think the triangle shape of the sotz fight deflection better than the beveled slightly curved head of the truoer

I have an old one and never use it. Handy for busting up big rounds. If i just cut wood for personal use id never own a hydro, but one i went that route ill never look back

A lot of people don't like the Monster Mauls because they are heavy and all steel. I wouldn't want to use one all day, but it can't be denied that they bust apart big rounds easier than axes and lighter mauls. No need to edge split with the Monster!

I reveal my favorite hand splitter in this video!

Well bought an fiskars isocore maul today.
Far superior to the truper 12 pounder.
Still glad I have the truper a man can't have to many axes/mauls
