What bar and ripping chain do I need for a G660 for milling?

Yep. That's what I'd do too.

    Get a magnetic tachometer
The G660 is the old Stihl 660 saw which had an actual carb. The 661 is the new M-tronic. Holzformma hasn’t gotten that design yet.

their saws are mainly the discontinued saws from the manufacturer with newer technology.

my G660 was only running out to 10500 rpm. Sounded like it was dogging big time.

I got it tuned to the 13500 rpm it’s supposed to run and it’s not the same saw.

holzforma really has this saw not tuned properly.

I got ripping chains which are a skip chain and also have 10* teeth instead of the normal 30* for cross cut. Yes, you can take your standard chains and regrind them to 10*.

I’ve got to take my carb apart and clean the screen inside. It’s giving me fits trying to start it.

I got a 32” Oregon bar for my mill that I got from ruggedmade.

Hey farmer j when running a ripping chain say over 24 do you notice a difference with the skip chain?
And a skip ripping chain is something you have to make yourself right
As far as regular cutting I run a skip chain 24 and bigger

my bad, I thought it was a skip chain…

the G660 is more than capable of running this chain for the task. I’m actually considering a Holzformma G070 and getting a 36 and 48” bar.

buddy went out east for the firewood show and there was a dealer who had one on their stand. Thing is a 105 cc beast. Yes, I’ve got trees 0n the property that could use a 60” bar.

I’m running a 56” bar on my 066 round top with an auxiliary oiler and it does fine on anything I can cut with it. The 070 will work on a 60” bar but they are slow in fact I bet a 066 would be as fast. I have a 72” double end bar Alaskan running .404 rip chain and my 090 is slow cutting in large stuff like when I cut some 50” diameter silver maple.

This is the 72” this log was only about 42” in the center but at the time I didn’t have the 56” bar for my 066 and there was a fork on another piece that ended up 62” or so at widest point.

If you get to them we may be able to avoid you having to buy a very large limited use mill and bar since I have a 72” grandberg and you live in mn also. I’m going to set it up with 2 saws i think the single 090 is pretty slow and I think twin 075/076’s or 066’s would work better.

I'm off to a great start. Before even firing up the saw the tensioner chowdered itself out.

Where can order online an OEM Stihl tensioner?

I’ve decided I’m going to slab them out and use them as counter tops and a table.

I'd just order from your local dealer, they are often cheaper than the online resellers.
A OEM tensioner may fix your issue, or not...it did not for me. I actually had to make some tiny shims to shim how the tensioner set in the case, that's what fixed the issue then.

Funny you mentioned this and much to my surprise it is true. I needed a gas cap for my 362 , cheapest I could find for OEM part online was around $15. Didn't want to wait so went to local dealer , under $8 out the door. I never expected that.

The resellers are buying from a dealer and marking things up...from what I understand dealers are not allowed to sell online themselves.
I dunno...my local dealer is usually 25-50% cheaper than what I see on ebay...heck I just paid less for a new 271 top cover than the damaged used ones listed on ebay! I made one guy an offer for $25 shipped on a used one with minor damage, he countered at 29, new was 32 IIRC. After I made the offer I was glad he countered so I could refuse it...not worth it to save literally a couple bucks

I find this often anymore with more than just saws. People that call them stealers instead of dealers make me laugh.

I basically can't order from my local dealer.

Where can I order online? I'll pay the extra cost because it's my only option outside of a hour+ drive to a decent dealer in another town.

Do you have a crappy dealer close? Even they would have a terrible time screwing up a chain tensioner if you bring a part number. This is on eBay. IMG_0173.png

Arghhhh. yeah I can't do ebay. My last four transactions have failed on there and I was out the money. Last one was an extremely rare floppy disk drive from eastern europe and it took three months to arrive and it arrived broken and by then the order was "too old" and I couldn't do anything with it.

And yeah I've tried to get my dealer to order stuff and they half azz it and then nothing ever shows.

New question; I have a couple weeks left to return this saw. Is there another 90cc I can get for a similar price that isn't going to put me into Stihl part purgatory every time something breaks?

Used oem 660 will have all the good parts in it including the tensioner for bar, but far as clones go I don’t think any of the others are much different than colors or labels. Think all the parts made in same factories and assembled into farmertec, pro mac ect

Weird, I have had excellent luck with ebay...most transactions are seamless, but the few that haven't been over the last 15-20 years, either the vendor made it right, or ebay stepped in and took care of it. I won't deal with people that have poor reviews...if they aren't 98%+, I'm probably out.
I don't recall dealing with anyone out of the USA though (I limit my searches to items "located in the USA") other than some glow plugs that have come from Europe the last 2 times...but they had excellent reviews and both times the transaction was smooth.

What's that mean? They tell you they ordered it, but didn't?
