I ended up using a Smuckers preserves jar for coffee the other day. I did not feel as cool Brandon Scott drinking coffee out of a mason jar. But it worked :)

Yes. Scott Joplin rags, standards and some classical. We have the 1940 Steinway B that was in my father's home when he was growing up. He is a very good jazz improvisational pianist himself, and we love it when he comes over to play. This piano is personally signed on the metal frame/harp by Theodore Steinway to my grandmother. It was played by the great Art Tatum, who was a friend of her brother, while he was in Minneapolis for a show in 1945. One of my father's brothers and the uncle who knew Art Tatum were excellent stride pianists. I was fortunate to be able to hear his brother play the Steinway before he passed on. His uncle Bud was very sick with emphysema the few times I saw him when I was young, and I never heard him play.

I had briefly considered a piano major in college, but playing primarily by ear, and being dyslexic for reading sheet music, it took me an inordinate amount of time compared to my peers to learn the first movement of Beethoven's Pathetique sonata, and quickly realized that to progress would have taken too much time away from my hunting/fishing, dating my now-wife, and other course work. My early experience with the aforementioned "Puna bud and Neil Peart" kindled an early interest in neuroscience and I eventually ended up doing my senior project in the area of religiosity and cerebral dominance, a master's thesis on the role of dopamine in the close relationship between transcendental experiences and some aspects of schizophrenia, and finally a doctorate in clinical psychology, with an emphasis in developmental neuropsychology.

One of our three children, our 25 year old son plays regularly, primarily by ear like me, and plays his own compositions as well, which I was never able to do at his level.

Great story hovland. I’ve had an experience similar to that sitting in the back of a BMW automobile (many many moons ago) and the owner played the entire cd from the song below. I was so engulfed in the music, I’ll never ever forget it. The cd still takes me back. You may have to have a decent Hi-Fi system to get the full surround effect but it was enlightening to say the least!

Music can have a profound effect on the nervous system. Music goes back to Jubal from Hebrews in the bible who was described as the forefather of all music. It is a gift from God in my opinion. I am listening to your post now and would say that I can imagine how this composition in that setting with surround altered your perception of reality. The unique thing that can happen with music is that it literally can take you away, to anther place in one's mind which transcends normal limits on perception. I remember one time playing for my mother-in-law sick with dementia. When I was playing for her I looked and noticed that she had developed a lucid look in her eyes and face that I hadn't seen in years, and afterwards she looked over to her husband and said as clear as her former self, "where were you just now" as if she was taken back in time, or somewhere else in her mind beyond the limits of her disease.
